Review

"There are basics for beginners and expert advice for more experienced practitioners. It is written concisely and releases just the right amount of information, in a simple format. Thought went into the cover too - it has a protective water resistant finish in readiness for being carried around. This is a real gem.?
"Nursing Standard. July 23: : vol 22 no 46: : 2008"

A must-buy 6 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I'm a third year student nurse and am not ashamed to say that I am nervous about qualifying in a few months. Whilst on Amazon, I came across this little book, and though I don't normally take too much notice of the reviews, I thought I would give it a try. I'm so glad I did and I would recommend this book to anyone who just needs a back-up book of information for either preparing to go on to a ward or for use during placement. It's written in such a way that that is very relevant to practice and answers many of those niggling questions that you can't get a straight answer to from normal textbooks. I haven't read the whole book yet as I have just dipped into it for bits of information, but I imagine it would have been really useful had I bought it a year ago before my acute placements. So if you are thinking of buying a similar book, I would definitely recommend this one.

I was recommended this little book by a friend studying at the University of Hertfordshire (the authors work there), so you can understand I was sceptical .... I took it with me on to the wards and now I want to tell the world about it.
It can't replace the books we all buy as student nurses and you will still need to look at your Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures and Infection Control in clinical Practice etc BUT this book gives you enough on procedures and infection control to reassure you you are on the right track so you can look at them later. But that is not why I think this is a gem of a book; it has a very practical approach (particularly the Appendixes) it also gives you a great deal on identifying and assessing patient problems (section 2 my favourite!), which for me stopped the constant 'is this ok?' type questions to the staff nurses.
There are other good useful bits in it but you will find your own favourite bits.

For me to have something easy to read, at hand, and based on practice not theory was a godsend.
