I've read three of Evelyn Prentis' books now and am champing at the bit waiting for the next one. She tells an interesting tale with warmth, wit and humour. There are some sad times but she handles those with her trademark dignity. I'd love to know more about Evelyn's family - husband and two daughters - but understand their wish for privacy. She seems like a lovely person and a good nurse, even though she enjoys pointing out that she was forced into nursing by her foster mum. Still she did the best job she could and her books are entertaining and very educational, since she actually lived through some very trying times - pre-antibiotics, pre-war, during the war and post war. Really interesting and very well told. I could never be a nurse (far too squeamish!) but I love reading all about her adventures. Brilliant! Her family must be really proud. But obviously, in that typically British way. I'm sorry she is no longer with us but it appears that she had a long and happy life. Well done her. And bring on the next book!

I love reading these type of books and my grandmother was a nurse who told me a lot about her life in a bygone era. The nurses worked so hard during the war, were paid little and had tough lives. This is a really good account of a nurse during the war. It is well written and I would recommend it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, well written and couldn't put it down! Though it was about a time before I trained as a nurse could nevertheless identify with it.

I've read the first three books by this author and loved them all. She tells of one of the most tumultuous times in England's history with enough detail for it to be relevant to her story without being boring. My husband's grandmother was a nurse through this era too. She came from South Wales and did her training in the fever hospital in Whitechapel. Now I understand some of what she went through. Well written, readable and informative.

Old fashioned nursing, when patients came first. Well worth a read of how nursing was compared to nursing today. A
