Marcus Miller has just been visiting Britain for various Jazz festivals, so tracks from this album have been in rotation on Jazz FM and this is quite a unique mix of different types of music.

You have Marcus' regular band, who can do Jazz and Funk as well as mixing elements of Hip Hop through DJ Logic on TurnTables. But for this live performance in Monaco, they are backed by a full orchestra and are joined by star guests from the Jazz world.

All the orchestral arrangements were written by Marcus himself and these really stand out on "So What" - which captures the sound created by Miles and Bill Evans, but then moves into a funky version of the tune with virtuosic solos from the band and Marcus himself riffing back and forth with the orchestra. Improvisation is not normally something associated with orchestral arrangments - but here it works very well to create something very exciting.

The tunes vary between funky grooves and Jazzy ballads, but Marcus is central to everything. First of the guests is Raul Midon on guitar and vocals - he sounds amazing, but it is Marcus' funky bassline that anchors "State of Mind".

In "I Love you Porgy" we hear Marcus's other side - he switches to a fretless bass sound reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius and plays expressively. The whole thing ends up sounding like Weather Report, but with the orchestra taking the role of Joe Zawinul's electronic keyboards.

Roy Hargrove, who leads his own bands, joins in here on trumpet for "Amandla", a tribute to the work that Marcus did with Miles Davis, late in his career. Again the music varies between gentle Jazz ballad to funk work-out and by "Mas Que Nada", sees Marcus really steal the show!

There is a bonus track with Marcus dueting with Herbie Hancock, but the best of this is the unique contrast between the exciting virtuosic bass guitar playing and a full orchestra. This must have been a difficult balance to pull off - but in this recording it works perfectly and is a really exciting mix.

No doubt this combination is an expensive rarity, so it's lucky we have this recording for posterity and it is genuinely different and while there are parts that veer towards either technical overplaying or sentimentality - the best of this is a genuinely exciting musical fusion.

One of the best CD i had for a long time. 19 May 2010

picked this CD up in a music shop in Ginza area. this was issued by Victor of Japan.
this is one of Miller's best. the music is rich, with diversity and depth.
from Miller's own Blast! to brasilian samba, from Miles to Jimmy Dorsey all interpreted with great intelligence.
the orchestral backing by Philharmonic Monte Carlo adds dimension and richness of the overall presentation.
i don't buy many CDs especially given today's economy.
however, after listened to the entire CD at the shop twice,
i decided to make some sacrifice and put down my hard earned $30.
thanks to Victor which always delivers high quality jazz.

Star People 10 Feb 2011

The artistic genius of Marcus Miller sweeps through the nine tracks from the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival on November 29, 2008, which features his quartet and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, along with special guests Roy Hargrove (trumpet) and Raul Midón (vocals, guitar).

The opening gems - "Blast!," "So What," "State of Mind," "I Loves You Porgy," "Amandla" - deliver the elements of funk, hip-hop and pop, with a strong vibe from Miles Davis lighting the stage. The closing superfecta of "I'm Glad There is You," "Medley: O Mio Babbino Caro/Mas Que Nada," "Your Amazing Grace" and "Strange Fruit" are built on orchestral textures that are enhanced by the sharp, studio-like mix and production.

For nearly 40 years, Miller has been refining his work as a composer, arranger, producer and musician. This special performance brings renewed focus and appreciation to his amazing career.

I'm a big Marcus fan, see him live whenever he's nearby. This one was quite interesting with the symphony accompaniment. I prefer Marcus my man a bit grittier buy, hey, a bit of innovation goes a long way.

Buy it, you'll like it!!
