Considering the excellent reviews, I was looking forward to reading this and all in all, I found it disappointing.
For me, these novels often succeed because they either have a killer plot or great characterisation and period atmosphere (it is rare for modern novels of this genre to achieve all of these). However, I didn't feel Mr Jackson pulled off any one aspect sufficiently well to make up for deficiencies in the others. To be honest, it all felt a bit patronising and simplistic.
Having delighted in finding a new historical mystery series, I doubt I'll bother with the second instalment, which is a shame because this is just the kind of thing that should appeal to me.
