I read this book a couple of years ago while I was still training to be a midwife and having just finished Penny and Sheryl's next book A Wise Birth I am reminded what an important book this is/was to me and how much of what they write about has stayed with me. It is vivid and moving and a fascinating insight into Penny's journey from being a hospital midwife to working and living with the Amish community

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It pictures how truly wonderful, natural and peaceful childbirth can be when faith and love are present and fear is absent. If only all women had such a midwife and trusted their own bodies!

This book is fantastic. Moving, informative, interesting, funny and honest. In these times of increasing interventions and medicalisation of childbirth, this gives a compelling insight into the innate ability of women to birth their babies. I think it should be on the curriculum for all midwives, obstetricians, doctors and antenatal educators. Not only that but it is a wonderful read for any new or expectant parent.
Although this book was written a number of years ago, the message is even more valid today. Buy it, you won't regret it!

A brilliant, insightful read. It has definitely given me food for thought as a student midwife. Would definitely, definitely recommend.

It's ok - for a one off read.
Nice book - wrote well but I don't think I could read it again ..... great for a one off read but not WOW.

Inspiring!
I read this book last week and could not put it down...It is beautifully written. Very inspiring!!! Must have for anyone in the profession but also to mum to be.

amish and English
It is strange how the simplest things can mean so much. I was purchasing a book (not Amish) from amazon when I saw this book a midwifes storys and curiosity got the better of me. Read more

great read
Lovely book. It's effectively ghost-written but reads as though written by the midwife, Penny. Interesting life story and insight into Amish community.
