Musical Genius Performed Masterfully 6 Mar. 2013

Any boxed set can be like opening Pandora's box when it is comprised of so many performers. In this case you get a total that is greater than the sum of its parts. Besides being well recorded and performed, this set gives you an insight into the genius of a composer who only lived to be 38 years old! There are 40 cd's in this collection plus a cd-rom with all kinds of interesting background information. The scope of Mendelssohn's compositions go from organ sonatas to choral gems to piano sonatas and chamber music. Besides this you get the well known symphonies, concertos, and overtures to round things out. Each recording is crisp, clear, and bright. It would be very hard to find a lot of the choral pieces apart from a collection like this. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn how much sacred choral music he wrote other than the included "Elijah" and "Saint Paul" oratorios. Brilliant Classics has another winner on its hands with this outstanding and bargain priced set.
