Review

I found the ordering and summary of materials, especially those applying encounter theories directly, to be helpful in ordering my own thinking. The ideas will be broadly familiar to experts in the field, but Kiorboe's clean, direct presentations pull them together in a rewarding way; your study time will be well spent. For aspiring experts, this mechanistic approach is important to master, and working through this book will give you a great running start. -- Charles B. Miller, Journal of Plankton Research What could be deadly dull material is enlivened by evocative examples from Kiorboe's extensive observations of plankton... One cannot read this book without gaining a much fuller appreciation of how fluid motion influences life in the sea. -- "New Biological Books

The reviews up above are a lot dryer than the book. They key thing is that plankton are small. Very small (to steal an idea from the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy), and all of our traditional approaches are a bit like trying to deduce the characteristics of humans by averaging the sample over a whole planet.

Plankton live in a very different world to us. The effects of viscosity are huge, and they are jostled about by Brownian motion. This book looks at life as a plankter sees it.

Great book 10 Nov 2010
By F. Taboada - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book presents a coherent view of plankton ecology, integrating physical and ecological processes, and scaling up from individuals to population and ecosystem dynamics. In this way, I found the book appropriate for anyone interested in plankton ecology. I think it could be especially relevant for those interested in modelling physical-biological interactions in the sea. Finally, the book is delightfully written and edited with care, so despite the materials treated are to some extent advanced, it is very a very readable, at times entertaining book.

Mechanistic Plankton Ecology 18 April 2009
By David Allen Zeigler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was hoping for a constructive presentation of plankton ecology models similar to the presentation of governing equations in continuum mechanics. This was not the case in the text.
