FOR BETTER OR WORSE

Taylor Braddock. His name brought back memories of a man so handsome that a young girl had fallen in love - and made a fool of herself. A man so unique he'd spoiled Sharon Philips for any other love.

But now her father's will had joined their lives once again. In a final attempt at matchmaking, Dad left half his California horse ranch to Sharon, the other half to Braddock - provided they were husband and wife.

A quick wedding. A quick divorce. A quick sale of the ranch. It seemed simple. But time had only fueled their passion. Could Taylor erase ten years of pain and show Sharon that loving him was her destiny?

This was a dated, but pretty decent read. It was reminiscent of Diana Palmer and Linda Howard in their 80's heyday, when cowboys were cowboys and settled things with their fists, and brawls. Yes, it is very clearly a reissue of an old novel, and it shows: mobile phones don't exist, neither does email, and calls to other parts of the same country are classed as long distance. But, the author is an old fave and I enjoyed it. Many won't, as it is very formulaic and did have several 'been there, seen that, have the t-shirt' moments.

It's a typical 80's romance with a successful female who comes back home to the town she grew up in and left behind, to marry the guy she'd always loved but could never have, though she hasn't stopped loving him. It is a marriage of convenience at first, but it's clear they have unfinished business, and that he has feelings for her. Conflicted ones, perhaps, but strong ones - if only he would talk about them. They both believe that the other is only marrying to keep their inheritance, and they go from misunderstanding to misunderstanding. Of course, outside factors don't help their path to true love, but they get there eventually, with a HEA, and with an epilogue that I felt was particularly deserved.

Did I enjoy it? Yes, as I knew what to expect. In fact I enjoyed it as much as her historicals, The Panther And The Pearl, and Panther's Prey, which are a little cheesy, but full of forbidden love and passion. Again, dated, and not to everyone's tastes, but I'm glad this was on offer as a freebie.

Flawed characters, great romance 25 Jan 2012
By teacher mom - Published on Amazon.com

This book was originally published in 1989, and while it may be dated, I really enjoyed it. The main characters are hopelessly flawed, which added a bit of realism to an unrealistic predicament. Tay is hot-headed and insecure, especially around Sharon. He worries she'll look down on him because she is a successful attorney, while he is a hard-working rancher. Sharon, on the other hand, denies their mutual feelings for one another, even though they are blatantly obvious. However, there are many redeeming qualities to this second-chance love story. It's well-written, and there are many twists and turns for the couple as they seek a happily-ever-after. The ending is very satisfactory, and I really appreciated the Epilogue.

When Sharon's father dies, he leaves her half of his California ranch, provied she marries her stepbrother, Tay (who inherits the other half of the ranch). If Tay and Sharon do not marry, they will lose the ranch. Sharon, a successful attorney in Philadelphia, knows the antiquated will cannot hold in court, but challenging it will cost a lot of time and money she doesn't have. She decides her only choice is to marry him for a few months until the will is probated, then divorce him and continue with her life as planned. The problem is, she and Tay have a history together, and things are not going to be that easy for her.

The story then goes back a decade to the summer when she first met Tay, when her father and his mother were married. He was a soldier who'd survived two years in a Vietnam POW camp, and she was an 18-year-old high school graduate. Love blossomed for them, but it ended bitterly. Sharon's humiliated to have to return back to the California ranch that was the scene of so much pain. When she arrives in California, one look at Tay sends her mind back in time. He's just as handsome as ever, and she quickly realizes she's not going to be able to let go so easily this time.

Sweet Story, Well Done 20 Jan 2012
By Janet Orosz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was definitely not my kind of book--but I loved it anyways. It was not a very original story--There are many similar ones out there, with even the same title, but few that are this well done. The story progresses in a natural fashion with realistic, but vulnerable characters, who are neither obnoxious nor stupid--a rare thing in Romance novels. The reasons behind their trust issues and first breakup were well-explained and not taken to ridiculous extremes. Cute story about times when romance needs a little help from the people who care about you and know you better than you know yourself.
