Product Description

CD Description

SoulMusic Records is proud to celebrate one of the first families of soul music with the 2012 reissue of three titles that reflect the amazing talent of sisters Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and their aunt Cissy Houston - expanded editions of Dee Dee Warwick s 1969 Foolish Fool LP (SMCR-5053); Cissy Houston s first solo album, 1970 s Presenting Cissy Houston (SMCR-5054); and this 1977 live album by Isaac Hayes & Dionne Warwick, A MAN & A WOMAN. Both producer-songwriter-turned-recording artist-performer Isaac Hayes and international hitmaker Dionne Warwick had already established themselves as musical icons by the time Hayes management team suggested the two tour together in the summer of 1977. It was a logical pairing in particular because Hayes had enjoyed his first experience of success as an outfront chartmaker with his unforgettable version of Warwick s classic 1964 hit, Walk On By that was featured on his Hot Buttered Soul breakthough album in 1969. Working together with their respective touring bands and background vocalists, the spectacular show focused on obvious hits from the catalogues of each performer including Dionne s original I Say A Little Prayer combined with Isaac s memorable reading of the Glen Campbell hit, By The Time I Get To Phoenix. In addition to tracks associated with each of the performers - such as Then Came You (Dionne s 1974 chart-topping duet with The Spinners) and Isaac s 1975 hits, Chocolate Chip and Come Live With Me - the pair created some great combinations of hits of the day including a fourteen-minute-plus whirlwind medley of seven songs; and a soulful combo of Feelings and My Eyes Adored You. Recorded at the end of the tour in Atlanta at The Fabulous Fox Theater, A MAN & A WOMAN is making its first appearance on CD and has long been in demand by fans of both artists. Notes by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan include 2012 quotes from Dionne Warwick.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow another great archive find 22 July 2012
By David Spanswick VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another life time ago I had a vinyl pressing of this; it was a double album presented in a gatefold sleeve and I played it til it was practically dust. I had not been a fan of "live" recordings until it was proved to me that sometimes that is all that is possible.

Maybe not the most obvious coupling, although Dionne seems to have made a career out of unlikely (and always brilliant) duets, the two voices blend like chocolate and coffee ~ sweet & hot and they sound as if they are having a ball, is there a visual recording of this concert anywhere?

Whoever is behind the rerelease of these original soul albums deserves the musical equivalent of the Nobel prize; this particular 36 year old recording sounds as fresh (even fresher) than on its original outing.
Any fan will have their stand out favourites from this concert ~ mine is the duet medley "I just dont know what to do / walk on by" as the reading feels so new even after such a history of both tracks.

There is, for me, a kind of completion finding this again after all these years ~ a true gift of an ageing Dionne fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling Duet 5 May 2011

It is certainly an enjoyable pleasure everytime I play this 2 LP set of A Man and a Woman. I wish I was old enough back in the day to attend this performance when it was recorded for this album. Issac and Dionne certainly showcased a vibrant versatility for a variety of songs as a duet as well as performing as a solo artist. Each of their soulful interpretations for all of the songs makes A Man and a Woman a very enjoyable album to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic 9 April 2010
By Laura Wilkison - Published on Amazon.com
I have always loved the music of these performers. In an other day in time I happened to borrow this album from my brother and the performance is stellar. Their duets are unique and give a new perspective on the songs which have been associated with each artist. I would like to see it put on CD. It is an audio banquet of sounds that stir all the senses and emotions.
