5.0 out of 5 stars Stop all the fighting bring it back to love. 12 July 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
All music lover should appreciate this album full of surprises but if you know of Bilal or listen to soul/R&B you'll defiantly in store for a treat, Bilal's latest offering goes back to his roots and makes powerful emotion and very soulful music and he surly has one of the best voices in the business and his lyrics insightful and thought provoking.
A must have for any collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Idiosyncracy! 18 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
Since 2001 Bilal has evolved as an artist with a distinctive and unabated passion for pursuing his particular musical vision, first heard on '1st Born Second' (2001), developed further on 'Airtight's Revenge' (2010), and evident throughout his collaborative work with Common and, more recently, Robert Glasper. Nearly three years on Bilal returns with 'A Love Surreal' on Barely Breaking Even (BBE) Records. Jazz fans will have noted the potential reference to John Coltrane, and there appears to be a reference to the work of Salvador Dali (1904-1989), perhaps indicating a unity of conception that is not often found in much modern music, and alerting the listener to a deeper symbolism. Speaking of the recording process in Philadelphia, Bilal commented, 'This was the fastest album that I've ever recorded...I thought I was just going to do an EP'. The question is, beyond the visual and titular, does the music justify the symbolism?

The album opens with 'Intro', a short, swirling instrumental, before launching in to 'West Side Girl', moving along with a low groove worthy of Sly & Robbie and vocal work hinting at Prince. This is the narrative prologue, the meeting that is full of promise and potential delight, before 'Back To Love', which already suggests a nostalgic yearning for a return to love. Released as the first single the sound is jazz inflected, with a very open feel to the instrumentation and vocal. This continues with 'Winning Hand', which moves to a rock influenced soundscape, hovering between melancholia and the potential of 'a game change, I'm on a roll'. 'Climbing' continues the live feel, exploring the expression of physical attraction whilst 'Longing & Waiting' returns to the nostalgia of past experience, transforming markedly around 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bilal's finest album 7 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bilal has stayed true to his artistry whilst never comprising style and form. I have been a fan of Bilal's since his first album, but this has to be his finest achievement to date. This is not First Born Second or Airtight's Revenge - but what we see in Love Surreal is Bilal evolving - taking us on a journey through life- with a powerful effect. The lyrics are deep, symbolic, spiritual, and I suspect deeply personal to Bilal - but we can all relate.

A Must Buy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul record of the year. 9 Feb 2014

Intelligent R&B with guitars. I've been listening to this album since it's release and it gets better with each listen. True artistry, cool and unusual musical arrangements, songwriting that takes unexpected twists and a newfound confidence and swagger. This album works as a complete, self contained collection of songs like so many of the best albums of the past - it has it's own sound which separates it from the mainstream. A bona fide modern classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not first born second 6 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Quite unlike his first album but still quietly infectious, jazzy, contemporary in part. My favourites, 'Lost for now' which really needs to cross over, and the Glasper collaboration 'Butterfly'...............I don't regret buying it.......8/10
