5.0 out of 5 stars whimsical and enjoyable 18 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
A story of a little boy who is afraid of the lion that is in the meadow; his mother does not believe him and gives him a matchbox, telling him: there is a dragon in here that will grow bigger when you let him out; he will scare the lion away. The little boy does this and the lion retreats into the kitchen broom closet, the little boy follows. A delightful conversation between the mother and boy on the fictive nature of the dragon ensues. the boy and the lion become friends in the closet and exit to play on the other side of the house.
As a child I loved this book and read it over and over. Both the story and the illustrations are captivating. Wish that I could get this edition in the states...

Early '70's, long out of print. I'm told the originals of the unique gently mind-swirly illustrations are lost so it can never be brought back to life yet the story text is simple while the pictures are the child's life view. The 4 yr old's fantasy world and his mother's real world one, meet and mix seamlessly, beautifully, joyfully giving the message: it's fine and fun to create/believe. The ending - "the mother never made up a story again" as the lion reads an alphabet book open at L, at the feet of the boy and mother - it the simplest and most satisfying ending, multi-level, of any story, ever, anywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars An update on a much-loved classic 1 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
A Lion in the Meadow (Picture Puffin)
This was my son's favourite bedtime story; he's 36 now! I still have the battered copy, and bought this new version for my 2-year-old grandson for Christmas. Under fives will enjoy it. The text is almost the same as the original - simple, clear and repetitive, which small children love. It's a lovely story about make-believe which could come true! The illustrations have been updated to show a modern young Mum and little boy, and are beautifully drawn. A welcome addition is a small baby - perfect if your toddler is getting used to a new arrival in the family.
