Reviews

In 2008, a clip posted on YouTube featuring an emotional reunion between a young lion and his owners became an internet sensation. Overnight people wanted to know more about what lay behind this clip. The two men in question, Anthony ‘Ace’ Bourke and John Rendall, have published an updated bestselling version of their account of how they came to buy Christian the lion from a London department store in the late 60s. They explain how they lived with the lion whilst working in a furniture shop down the King’s Road in what was then the tail end of the swinging 60s and how they eventually came to introduce their lion into the wild under the watchful eye of lion expert, George Adamson.

For the first time this TV Special, filmed in 2009, pulls together this amazing story using up to date interviews with many of those involved in this unique story. It includes the original footage of Christian filmed in both London and Kenya, the reunion between the three and exclusive new footage of a second reunion which was to be the last time the two men would see Christian.

Exclusive DVD Extras include:
• Life at Sophistocat
• The stories behind the award winning photographs
• Readings by John and Ace
• Reactions to the YouTube sensation

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian the Lion I remember you 22 May 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
What a heartwarming story, and so incredible. Finally puts to rest the false idea that animals do not remember individual people - of course they do, but try convincing the scientists - well, let them all watch this film! All credit to Anthony Bourke and John Rendall for caring what happened to Christian, and especially to George Adamson who ultimately was responsible for introducing Christian to a 'normal' life for a full grown African lion. I have watched this film many times and each time I am struck by the powerful bond between Christian and his two human friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars The call of the wild 27 July 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Although, rightly unthinkable nowadays to sell lions in a high street store and raise them as pets in urban surroundings (a fact now acknowledged by Christian's former owners), the story of Christian's early years, his release into the wild and reunion with Ace Bourke and John Rendall is strangely uplifting.

Ace and John very soon took the difficult decision to return their much loved lion to its natural habitat. This was a process, in itself fraught with bureaucratic difficulties. Ironically, it was far easier in the sixties to purchase a lion as a pet, than to obtain permission from the country of origin for its return. Under the care of George Adamson, Christian was gradually released into the wilds.

His brief reunion with Ace and John Rendall was a heart-stopping moment.

Although I am not an avid fan of films or books about animals, this was a heartwarming account of an unlikely bond forged between man and beast. Yet despite Christian being raised by humans and bonding closely with them, ultimately, the call of the wild proved far stronger than any human ties.
