Book Description

23 May 2005

A wonderfully rich and absorbing historical novel following the fortunes of a struggling artist around the courtly world of Elizabethan London.

Norfolk, the 22nd year of Elizabeth I's reign. An ambitious young painter strikes out from his humble beginnings for the teeming City of London. Haunted by the image of his bride's gruesome death, and fuelled by his desire to portray the splendour of life, he sets his sights on a place at the Queen's glittering court.

Yet talent alone does not open the doors to royal favour, and the artist is thrown into the petty intrigues and rivalries of the English portrait schools. Here he meets Kat, a legendary courtesan with an unusual proclivity for paint. Their complex alliance leads them into a world of bribery, politics and power, and a court peopled by the celebrated figures of the age.

A Likeness is a masterly portrayal of Elizabethan England, the lives of noblemen and servants, artists and courtesans. It is also a deliciously erotic tale of two young people's desires and a thriller of intrigue and double-dealing.

Review

‘Portraiture, courtiers and a courtesan called Kate Joyce all play their part in Overall's debut historical novel. A treasure chest of detail, A Likeness is all about love and art.' Elle

‘In terms of its visceral resonance, Sonia Overall's dazzlingly accomplished historical debut is likely to get under the skin. It's a vivid tale, part-political thriller, part-potent account of the perils of ambition and desire, but while its plot is pacy enough, it is Overall's rich language that intoxicates.’ Observer

'Ripely written and unconventionally erotic … stuffed with period atmosphere and court intrigue. This is a book that wants to ravish the daylights out of you' Daily Telegraph

'Overall's writing is a potent and rich brew … A Likeness is an excellent, beautifully written and very entertaining novel' Booktrust

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of art 21 Sep 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Sonia Overall has crafted a finely drawn portrait of Elizabethan life, a time when plague and politics could prove equally fatal. The vivid language makes scenes and characters spring from the page fully formed and vital and the artfully constructed narrative draws the reader in and will not let go even beyond the final sentence. The novel reawakened my interest in this period of history and inspired me to seek out the work of some of the artists encountered by the narrator. An excellent novel and a strong debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars surprising find 27 July 2007
By Roman Clodia TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I picked this up 2nd hand in an Oxfam bookshop and so wasn't expecting much... but it's a great find. The author has steeped herself in the Elizabethan age and has really transferred the texture of it to her pages. Unlike most historical fiction (which seems to be pretty undistinguishable from chick-lit) which is dry history lessons dressed up in historical costume, this is a novel which has a story of its own to tell, and it happens to be set in the time of Elizabeth.

Rob is a painter, obsessive and ambitious, who comes to London and then cannot get into the court. The first 100 or so pages I found quite hard going (it reminded me of early Dickens without the flair) but then the novel really comes to life. Allying himself with the exquisite courtesan Kat, Rob becomes fashionable, painting all the court luminaries: Leicester, Raleigh, Essex...

I don't want to give too much away as the plot does matter (despite its rather rushed ending). One of the most amazing thing about this book is its lush, sensuous language. Some may hate it, I loved it.

This is a literary book that reminds me of Perfume, Dickens - it has a dark side beneath the surface and is quite disturbing, but enthralling all the same, something you can sink into and forget the real world.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant debut 17 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Picked it up in paperback as a present for my wife. Started reading it and had to get her something else after bending the spine back on the train. Surprisingly gripped by it as not the sort of thing I normally read. Wife loves historical stuff but this is much more intelligent than the bodice stuff she normally goes for. Bit of a stretch. Great vocab. Cant believe this is really a first book by the author as it seems very acomplished. Will look out for the next one.
