Product Description

What does it feel like to stare into the face of madness? Or to anticipate your own? Would you drive away your only love? Could you pretend it didn't matter? How far would you go to protect a friend, or to avenge a death?

Ten years ago, Devon gave up the love of her life, fearing she would one day fall victim to the mental illness that has slowly ravaged the mind of her mother, who is now being cared for in a private facility.

Just when it seems Devon might have a chance to make up for past mistakes, her best friend Cass becomes a suspect in the murder of her sister's drug-dealing boyfriend. Devon knows Cass is lying about the details of her involvement and the lead detective on the case, convinced that Cass is guilty, is relentless in his pursuit of justice.

When her mother's young, emotionally disturbed roommate insinuates she knows something about the night of the murder, as well as details from Devon's own life that no one else is privy to, Devon becomes desperate to uncover the truth before Detective Lake does. As the investigation continues, Devon is led down a path she never expected and forced to face her greatest fears of life and love.

Tangled in a web of lies, regrets and questions, can she find a way to let go of the past and start again? And, once the mystery is solved, can she live with the secrets she's uncovered?

Join author Devon Pearse in this semi-autobiographical journey through the most heartbreakingly beautiful and deceptively mysterious events of her own life and the lives of those closest to her.

About the Author

_________________ Devon Pearse was born and raised in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida. As a child, she was surrounded by classic literary works and grew to love and cherish them as dear old friends. It was only natural that she would dream of one day being an author and joining the ranks of the creators of these other worlds, unforgettable characters and thought provoking prose. Also an accomplished poet, Devon honed her skills while reading the poetry of Thoreau, Whitman, Longfellow, Byron, Shelley, Frost, Poe, and many others. She credits her family with instilling that love of the written word deep within her soul. Devon's writing has been described as "Deeply moving and exquisitely lyrical" and she strives to draw her readers into her often heartbreaking and emotionally charged world. In addition to writing, Devon enjoys afternoons at the beach, listening to a broad range of music, amateur photography, and spending time with her friends and family. Her prized possessions include a 1911 edition of Peter and Wendy and Smiley, her stuffed hyena.

A Lighter Shade of Gray tells the story of its narrator, Devon, as she becomes embroiled in a homicide investigation in which her best friend, Cass, is a suspect. Unfolding against the backdrop of the picturesque Florida port of St Augustine, A Lighter Shade of Gray is a fast-moving and exciting story of murder, mystery and madness. It is also a story of love found and lost as Devon recounts the waxing and waning of her romance with childhood sweetheart, Drew. More than that, it is an, at times, profound study of the nature and (un)reality of memory and the vicelike and seductive grips it can hold us in. It is great testament to the talents of the author that she can weave such reflections (an appropriate word given the book's recurring motifs of the double and the looking glass) into her lyrical prose without ever letting up on the entertainment or propelling the narrative forward. A Lighter Shade of Gray is full of the poet's acute observations of emotions, but whilst the aches of the narrator's regrets and longing are keenly felt, there is always a wry sense of humour close at hand to off-set the pain. This is an accomplished debut novel by an up-and-coming American author who has attained sure command of her craft.

A star is born! 9 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Deeply moving and exquisitely lyrical, this is an incredible debut novel. Devon Pearse is one of those rare writers who can tell a tale with the skill of a poet, insight of a psychologist and prose of a true author. Simply brilliant. Bound to be a word of mouth success story.

Format:Kindle Edition
I chose to download this book simply because of the price... wow what a book. It is not my usual genre but I have to say it was superb.The writer drew me in from the first page and I found myself completely lost in her beautiful writing.It is first book I have read in a long time that actually moved me to tears, not just because of the story line, but because of her wonderfully descriptive prose. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.. Quite simply stunning

Still, the days of youth fall like petals from a flower. All too soon they fade and blow away. We reach the gates of Grown-up Land in haste, only to hesitate outside them for a time in shell-shocked horror, wondering how we got there so damn fast. "e;

Each soul is a mystery, a puzzle box of hopes and wants and dreams, and all the pretty little pieces of the vast illusion we create to shield our inner selves. In the end, the colors run and bleed together, and finally fade into the dust. But the evidence remains; captured images and writing and the like. "e;
