Book Description

25 May 2009
In the late 1940s the Civil War is over, and Franco is still very much in charge. Prullas, a once-popular playwright, leaves his wife by the seaside while he pursues a crowded life in the stifling city: his producer wants him to persuade their rich patron Vallsigorri that they cannot use the third-rate actress Lili whom the backer has foisted on him. In the course of playing honest broker, however, Prullas starts an affair with Lili. Fate intervenes: Vallsigorri is murdered and Prullas is prime suspect, but as this is a light comedy, the ending is, to some extent, a happy one.

Product Description

"He proves once again that for sheer descriptive writing he is unrivalled, as he evokes the sad ghosts of post-Civil-War Spain" Andre Clavel, L'Express; "While the story dissolves into farce, he has along the way given the reader a very clever insight into those dire years under the Franco regime; his skilful dissection of social behaviour at the time is alone sufficient to mark out this novel as one of the most durable and wisest in recent years" Rafael Conte, ABC Literario --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow Burner but worth it 14 July 2013
Hmmm..well, I was torn on giving this 3 stars. It is not nearly as good as the next 'Englishman in Madrid' which i read in a day and loved.

Yet the rave reviews...the setting is enchanting despite the period: Franco's Spain - and the many characters add a fascination so it is worth a read just for the time and place. We have a rich, smart set with a murderer in their midst and our hero is being set up by the Falange governor.

Only there are just too many people in this - and the pages of script dialogue are utterly tedious and you'll just turn the page. This could have done with a good editor - it is too long, the scripts pointless, and what could be a good page turner is not due to that structure.

Still, do give it a go. Still very unique and not the cookie-cutter stuff we get from publishers now.

Wandering around Barcelona in the heat of summer a few years after the war, and encountering members of the artistic community and their spouses makes interesting reading. However, couldn't quite get to grips with an overall theme, apart from Don Carlos wanting to casually bed every woman he encounters (all of them willing participants seemingly no matter how short the acquaintance). Was life really like this back then? The author has gone to some lengths to acquaint himself with eg the movies playing during this era. Well written, but took too long to find what it was about, and by then, might have moved on to a book with a genuine theme.
