I have enjoyed most of Mark Rashid's books on horsemanship and absolutely loved Kathleen Lindley's "In The Company Of Horses" so this book, which consists of big full-page photos along with explanations from Mark and/or Kathleen as to what was going on when it was taken or why it is significant to them should have appealed to me absolutely.

Sure enough, it did- the photos are really well-caught moments and the explanations give them further interest and significance. It doesn't have the depth and content of their regular books, but then it's not supposed to. It's easily pick-up and put-downable and although it is deliberately lightweight in content it still carries enough of those flashes of insight to really help get you thinking about how you do things with your own horses.

This is, in essence, fan service- it's not really a place to get started with the work of either of it's authors, but as a fan -both of good horsemanship and good photography - I consider myself well served by it.

I've read most of Marks' books and always enjoy them. Like many horse lovers I wanted to work with them when I was young, but the openings just were not there when I was a lad. However Mark is careful to point out the drawbacks to his work, spending months at a time on the road driving a large truck thousands of miles around America, Europe and the UK. Mainly living and sleeping in the truck. Not seeing his family during these periods. You do need to be dedicated. There is always the chance of being seriously injured, by one of his often badly traumatised 'Patients'. There are some lovely photos in the book taken by his ex apprentice and occasional helper Kathleen Lindley with comments and anecdotes from both of them. A great book for horse lovers. JR.

Mark Rashid never fails to amaze! You can almost feel the spirit of the horses through the photographs. Very informative about his work and yet using little words. Kathleen's photographs were inspiring.

Beautiful book!! 27 Jun. 2008
By Lisa A. Flynn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I recieved this book yesterday, and I have not been able to put it down yet. I find myself reading through the pages and then flipping back and forth to view these amazing pictures again and again. Mark and Kathleen are masters at the work and I am hoping that I will one day be able to participate in one of these clinics. I have always felt like they do about the gentleness of training and building a trusted relationship with my horse, and when I read one of Mark's books for the first time last year, I was hooked. I have read them all... What a treasure this book is.. It is now my offical "coffee table" book...

Totally Mark Rashid! 2 Nov. 2009
By Joanne M. Friedman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
You don't have to be a Rashid fan to enjoy this book, though you're likely to read some of his work after you've finished it. Kathleen Lindley does a bang-up job of chronicling a year on the road with Rashid and her own training and clinician experiences. There is a great deal to learn about horses, and this book offers some wonderful insights into why certain methods are more successful than others. Pair any of Rashid's works with something by Temple Grandin, and you've got a top-notch animal behavior and training course at your fingertips.

Not what I expected 17 Nov. 2010
By Horse Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I am a big fan of Mark Rashid. I love his laid-back style and the way he tells a story. He is humble and modest and always seems willing to learn new ideas. I was excited to read this book. I couldn't wait to see photos to go along with the wonderful stories he has to tell. I was disappointed. The photos, while artistic, I guess, had little meaning for me. Of all the places Mark has been, the people he must have met and the horses he must have interacted with, the last thing I was expecting to see was a close-up of a body brush or the tooling on his saddle. The photos and accompanying descriptions made Mark sound full of himself. I think the photos have a "you had to be there" kind of quality. They weren't nearly as meaningful as the authors made them out to be. As I said, I am a big fan of Mark's. Buy his other books, but take this one out of the library.

Spirit of the work 19 Feb. 2009
By Michael E. Paruszkiewicz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The book concept is wonderful - Mark and Kathleen do a nice job of expressing thier views of the wonderful photos that Kathleen took. The print was too small - even with my reading glasses, it was difficult for me to read.
For Rashid fans a must have, subtle & inspiring 24 Sept. 2012
By Matthias Knab - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I am actually writing this review to add a positive voice - for all Rashid fans who benefited from and like his books, this is a fine one to add. For most of the pictures, both Mark and Kathleen share their insights and reflections. The book is divided into 10 chapters, and I found #8 and #9 - Patience and Softness - to be outstanding and completing what Rashid wrote in some of his other books.

Rashid is an exceptional writer and horseman. I love buying and reading good books, but I also tell you that Rashid is probably the only author where I HAD to make sure I have ALL of his published books. "A Life with Horses - Spirit of the Work" was the last one I bought from him, and I can fully recommend it if Rashid's books touch you. I would recommend though to read his other books first, and keep this one as an addition or illustration (hence the photoes).

And since we're on the topic of good books, if you haven't yet read Kathleen Lindley's book "In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road with Horseman Mark Rashid", that is another goodie. Go for it!
