Probably one of the most charming books I have ever read. It is beautifully written with extraordinarily vivid descriptions of life in pre-first world war Cairo. The writer's powers of observation when a child and subsequently remembered in her adult life, are superb. Priscilla Napier's wickedly sharp wit shines through every page. I actually laughed out loud on more than one occasion. It is remarkable that she seems to remember so well how she viewed the world when a headstrong child - her memories and opinions are vivid and convincing, touching and highly entertaining.
