Product Description

Jack Lester has to find a bride...

But where can he find the perfect woman? She has to be attractive, kind, a good conversationalist...and most important, she has to accept him as he is: devilishly handsome, charming and, as far as anyone knows, poor as a church mouse! If London society discovers his hidden wealth, he'll never find the right wife.

Jack's heart races when he first lays eyes on Sophie Winterton. She is everything he desires--and more--but he is caught in his own trap. Believing that Jack needs to marry into wealth, Sophie rejects all his advances, certain he would never marry a poor girl like her. As they play out a game of cat and mouse, can Jack convince her that she is the woman he wants--and that he is the husband she deserves?

4.0 out of 5 stars jack lester needs to find 1 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
a bride quickly before it become common knowledge that the lester family fortune has been revived. so at a country ball he sees sophie and he falls in love with her. But with the gossips telling her he must marry money, jack finds it difficult to get sophie to agree. obviously the lester series is some of laurens early work as this novel first published in 1995 so not great but you can see the foundations for the lengthy cynster series. good start

4.0 out of 5 stars Mild endeavour 20 May 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Jack wants to find a bride who is not enamoured with his newly found wealth & falls for Sophie on first sight, & in his narative the reader is aware that he beleives that she is his. The story then centres around how she beleives that he has to marry into money & how she is willing to sacrifice him even though she has fallen for him.
Certain parts of the book e.g. the masterful way that Jack takes command of certain situations fairly early in the book like for instance when he saves her from being thrown from her horse & orders her not to risk her life is brilliant & later when he declares himself there is true mastery in captivating the reader but unfortunately these moments are rare. For this reason the book falls short & sometimes seems to drag.
I would however recommend it because of its true "culture". I read "Unwilling Conquest" before reading this one which is the tale of Harry the brother & with SL you do not have to read one to read the other. This one however was much more in line with SL & has that excitement & is one that I have kept.
I still rate her however as I feel that this is true & pure regency!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't have Big Expectations on this book 30 Aug 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Its not one of the best books Stephanie Laurens has ever written, the start of this book is very slow starting and the man/hero/main charater whatever seems very arrogant and full of himself which doesn't make you want him to get the girl really so which kind of breaks the plot and the want to read further but if you can get pass that (which I did with a few trys,) it turned out not that bad if only for the fact that after you have read it, it feels like as if you have just read one of stephanies not so really hard thought on plots. The story is of Jack Lester who has to find a bride . . .

She has to be attractive, kind, a good conversationalist . . . and more important, she has to accept him as he is: devilishly handsome, charming and, as far as anyone knows, poor as a church mouse! If London society discovers his hidden wealth, he'll never find the right wife.

Jack's heart races when he first lays eyes on Sophie Winterton. She is everything he desires -- and more -- but he is caught in his own trap. Believing that Jack needs to marry into wealth, Sophie rejects all his advances, certain he would never marry a poor girl like her. As they play out a game of cat and mouse, can Jack convince her that she is the woman he wants -- and that he is the husband she deserves? like I say slight arrogance threw out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lady of expectations 13 Mar 2012
By Lily M
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoy most of Stephanie Laurens books, well written most in series, all pass seamlessly between series and family hook ups. I wish they were cheaper, but well written and popular books tend to be about the same. I find I can read these books time and time again, and would buy all her books if I could.
