Format:Audio CD
With a stable of A-league popsters behind him Brian Higgins is a
distinctly odd choice for the producer of Gossip's fifth album release.
Hardcore fans may be disappointed that most of the raw edges that we
have come to know and admire have been given a new shiny makeover
but with Beth Ditto at the helm 'A Joyful Noise' still warrants our
love and attention. Truth-be-told Ms Ditto does sound a tad reined-in
at times (the dark disco anthem 'Perfect World' is perhaps the most
obvious example - she really doesn't need THAT much reverb to put
the ball into the back of the net!) and guitarist Nathan Howdeshell
is relegated to a far less prominent position than he deserves but
overall the album still delivers a few strong offerings. 'Involved' is
a cracking song which places the voice well-forward in the mix where
it rightly belongs and once it gets going 'Horns' packs quite a punch
but numbers such as 'Get Lost' and 'Move In The Right Direction' are
decidedly lacklustre. Even a potential winner like penultimate track
'I Won't Play' is marred by unnecessary sparkly synth decorations.
When all's said and done a little bit of Beth Ditto is certainly better than
none at all but next time around the band might do well to re-examine
and re-discover the rough-and-ready qualities which made them so special.

It's pop all the way through - catchy choons galore. Love Beth's crystal clear voice. I'm not really into the early stuff by this band so I guess that's why I like it so much.

Much better than I expected. A real mixture Of polished pop tunes with loads of base. I never realized how good her voice is so bought the rest of the albums, but i would say this one is the best

groovy, energising
I have listened to this maybe 5 times now and i love it. There are a couple of immediate tracks and then other ones start to grow, i think this album will have lasting quality.

Great Music
I absolutely love this album. I wasn't familiar with Gossip but I can say that I can't stop listening to these songs. So, for me, this album is 5*.
