Product Description

Review

`at his best, which he often is in this collection, he makes the process of poetry look easy, which only a fool thinks it is' --Herald

`the tactile tact, as it were, is uniquely his: a big man with a light touch' --Financial Times

`a luminous book, then, a creaturely work of blessing and acceptance, crafted, generous and sure' --Irish Times

'A Hundred Doors should both satisfy and surprise Michael Longley's admirers. It reaffirms (if this was ever necessary) his place in the trio of outstanding Irish poets of the past half-century, alongside his friends Derek Mahon and Seamus Heaney ... His voice has become more frank and intimate with the years; serious readers of A Hundred Doors will sense the privilege of close acquaintance with a poet who still has plenty to say and never writes anything he doesn't mean' --The Sunday Times

'One of the most perfect poets alive. There is something in his work both ancient and modern. I read him like I might check the sky for stars...the democratic ambassador of a landscape of wonders and fidelities' --Guardian

`a pursuit of form and beauty that strives to transcend the carnage humankind inflicts on its own' ---- Times Literary Supplement

A set of mostly very short poems, mostly about nature (flowers principally), but also about growing old (there are memorable poems on the death of friends and also on the appearance of friends entering deep old age) and war (a particularly memorably poem about the Military Cross Michael Longley's father won in Word War One - with a short pendant pointing out what "mopping up", part of the MC citation, actually meant for German soldiers).

This was one of three books of poetry recommended by the Financial Times for summer reading. I very much enjoyed it on that basis - and may be encouraged to dig out the other two!

Longley writes with a simplicity, clarity and sensitivity that make these short poems instantly accessible as they speak to us of his joy in his grandchildren, his love for his wife, his reverence for life and art and his acceptance of mortality. At the same time, many of them distill and concentrate feelings, have a beauty of phrasing and shape and are subtly interwoven with each other and with Longley's earlier poetry in a way that makes you want to hold them in your mind for a long time.

Michael Longley takes the small things in life and polishes them to make them shine like jewels off the page.
