Product Description

Review

Praise for his adult novels: 'Wonderfully well-written.'

(Time Out )

'A modern fairy story ... Buxton is possibly the best of the new supernatural writers.' (Phil Rickman )

'More than just a historical novel ...  It succeeds in being a novel set in the past. This is achieved by Buxton's confident control over the many subtle strokes which make up his layered narrative, and by his adroit handling of the story.'

(Times Literary Supplement )

Fiercely enjoyable, it's a rip-roaring read.

(Times )

The story is well paced with accessible language and with some fun anachronistic expressions.

(School Librarian )

Product Description

Tog has fulfilled his destiny - but destiny bites back. He's got it all: power - he's the high king; friendship - those who fought for survival alongside him are still at his side; love - Jenna, his extraordinary young warrior queen, who seems to hold the key to some all-powerful mystery in her very being.

Then a savage warlord called the Dragon rips it all away. What do you do?

If you're Tog, you set off to win it back, even though the quest seems hopeless, even though everyone tells you it's hopeless. Alone, guilt ridden, you push down the rivers of Britain into the heart of country to pit your courage and resolution against the Dragon, this byword of evil and depravity who rules with a powerful war band that includes vicious child soldiers. He's terrorizing the country round his stronghold, turning everything to a blasted ruin, corrupted and corrupting. There is no way forward for Tog but to face the forgotten armies, the hostile tribesmen, the ancient mysteries he can barely grasp - and his own demons.

This sequel to I Am The Blade is just as compelling and exciting, though with a darker edge. The characters, in particular Tog and Jenna, have hard lessons to learn about the dangers they face from their own flaws and passions, as well as from the hostility of others. Just as in the first book, the world created is very real - I could smell the river mud, feel the heat of the furnaces in the mines. In the same way, the people are convincing, and often very funny, even in the direst circumstances. New characters like Toothache have a flesh and blood reality about them, while the relationship between the central characters is developed. Jenna is prominently featured in this story in a way that is cleverly plotted. and we also get to know her better as we get inside her head. Most of all though, I found it very satisfying to be back in Tog's world, with the pigsies (yes they reappear) and haunting new creatures like the Little Swords. A good read - not to be missed.

Dissapointing 21 April 2011

I was looking forward to this book, the authur has created some good charactures and ideas but lacks the ability to bring them together in an uninterupted flow. There are alot of unfinished story lines that could have been brilliant given more work to bring them together. As i said, dissapointing due to i could see the wonderful book it could have been.
