Reviews

The new town sheriff (Bill Oberst Jr) moves into a large creepy old house with his family. It seems that in the town of Salem there s a special house for the sheriff to live in gratis.

Unfortunately it s haunted by witches that have a strong craving for sheriff s blood.

This film is absolutely awful. We tried watching the 3D version but the quality was so bad that we reverted to the 2D version. The plot is so weak and the acting is terrible - the characters are not convincing as a family. We enjoy good ghost / haunting stories and this film does not fall into this category!

Possibly the worst film I have ever seen. The plot is very weak, the sheriff and his wife just don't seem a credible couple, the whole film is terrible from start to end. Avoid at all costs.

I think the last two reviews are beingf a bit unkind. This is not a Hollywood blockbuster style horror, but then you know that when you buy it. It doesn't have all the flashy CGI effects, but what it does have is real suspense. There are plenty of edge of the seat moments, created by the direction rather than special effects, or make up.
Old school horror, definitely wortha watch

Firstly let me say the previous three reviews are either one extreme or another you have two people saying how bad it is and one saying how wonderful. In my opinion its a very predictable haunted house horror, its very true to its low budget roots and does not try to be anything else, the soecial effects are old school but not in a tacky kinda way. The main family are a strange group mother and daughter do look very similar which can be a little confusing sometimes and the son has very little screen time which is a good thing as he is a truly terrible actor. The dad is supposed to be the new local sherrif but instead he spends all his time at home even when he puts on his uniform he never seems to go to work. The story itself is about 19 hung witches taken there revenge on all the sherrifs in a small town and killing them and there families, It begins with a death 50 years before of a previous family and moves from there. There are a few other characters all of whow are only there to die in various ways. It does have its moments but not enough and the ending is very rushed.
Plot - 2.5/5
Acting - 2/5
Effects - 2/5
Overall I will go with a 2.5/5

The Downs family move to Salem so that Wayne can start his new job as the town Sheriff.

They move in to an old house that has a macabre history, witches were hanged there in the 1600's.

There's an urban legend that a family were killed in the same house years earlier.

After a while the Downs family discover that there's more to the legend and to the house than the towns people are letting on..

So it's half Amityville, and half the Shining, it's nowhere as good as either of those movies, but also it's nowhere as near as bad as what the critics are saying.

It's rarely scary, and the film does consist of the lead actor (who looks like a bargain Viggo Mortensen) running around the house trying to get away from all the bad acting and the constant vomiting of his daughter.

Obviously she is ill so weird things happen to her, and then she becomes evil, but it will look like the Sheriff will get the blame, because all the sheriffs who live in that house turn evil.

Maybe the Mayor (who looks like a bargain basement Jeffrey Wright) should have changed the locale.

So all in all, it's not scary, baseball bat sounds are out of synch, and the village idiot has a stutter.

I've seen worse, not many though.

And the 3D isn't worth mentioning.

I hated this film in 3D, but loved it as a normal DVD. This is a brilliant DVD, and my fiance loved it to, as we both love haunting DVDs.

absolute rubbish, bad acting, rubbish storyline, boring and the 3d effect was as flat as a pancake that had been ran over by a road roller.

If you have a all region blu ray player, then you can get the better version of this movie, which was shot in real 3d. It's a decent story b movie horror film and not a effects movie and the real 3d makes it creepier. It's a haunted house movie that is good enough for low budget fans and even better for fans of depth 3d. AND the 3d on the blu ray version is EXCELLENT. It was shot in native 3d and unlike many low budget titles out there in 3d which look bad; this one on blu ray 3d is outstanding! Most 3d is about depth and not popping out at you and this being native 3d just shines. Why they shortchanged europe on this fine example of 3d filming is beyond me. instead you get a dvd version which won't cut it. The movie is a average ghost story and I didn't mind it's lack of big effects in 3d it's creepier though for sure. I was shot in california though which is more like the climate of southern italy and not in conneticut which is similiar in climate to ENGLAND!. Still the acting is decent enough , but for fans who like depth driven 3d , this is a good purchase. (THE U.S. real 3d blu ray version), unlike many low budget 3d flicks , like 'hybrid' etc this was shot using 3d cameras, so it looks great. go to amazon.com to get the real 3d blu ray version . and amazon.com uk to get a all region 3d blu ray player. which can also play any dvd from aruond the world.
