Book Description

22 Oct 2008

Determined to find the ex-lodger who stole his grandmother's savings, Fred McAlpine and his friends Sid, Rosie, Algy and Clio launch on a series of sleuthing activities to trace the thief. Unfortunately their detective work leads them nowhere fast and very soon they decide the best way to track a thief might just be by acting like one themselves.

Resorting to cunning of their own, the children find their doings attracting the attention of the police. Can they - a handful of well-meaning thieves - find the criminal and vindicate themselves in the process?

Pacy and suspenseful, A Handful of Thieves is another vivid and colourful novel from one of Britain's most inventive children's authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful 6 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Fred, Sid, Rosie, Algy and Clio are the Cemetery Committee and they are saving up for a big fireworks display. Fred's grandmother is taking in this stranger who calls himself a vegetarian although Sid swore that he saw the mysterious man at the café eating a big juicy steak - he has great superstitions about this Mr Gribble guy. Follow the kids as they try to track a thief by acting like one. The strangest thing about this man was that he had the voice of a fat person even though he was a tall, thin, evil man. He is a criminal and Sid knows it but can't get everyone else to believe him until he strikes! This book is one of my favourites!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read 11 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
There were five of them - which is why they were called a handful of thieves.
Not that they were real theives, of course. They just had to act like theives to catch the sinister Mr Gribble.
Sid had known straight away that there was something odd about Gribble.
He pretended to be just an ordinary lodger, but Sid knew better. Apart from anything else, it wasn't right for a tall, thin man like him to talk with a voice like that!
So when Gribble scarpered with Gran's svings, Sid wasn't surprised. But he was determined to get the money back - even if it did mean the five children had to behave like theives themselves!
An exciting, often funny, thriller by the author of "Carrie's War" and "The Peppermint Pig".

It's a book about a group of children who play by the river and dare each other to do things. When they find someone suspicious, they tail them! When these little police-kids find a real criminal, they find the house the "criminal" is renting. Finally, they climb in the window to look for clues. They are spotted and what will happen?
