Book Description

15 Jun 2008 Meeting the Buddhas (Book 2)
A unique guide to Buddhist Bodhisattvas, or Enlightenment Beings. These are archetypal figures dedicated to one thing: helping ordinary people on the path towards Enlightenment. Their vision is to work endlessly in the service of living beings, helping them to achieve Enlightenment. This Guide introduces a panoply of figures, superheroes all, brilliant and beautiful, from the vast array that exists in the Buddhist tradition. Meet Tara, the rescuer, Manjusri the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, among others.

More About the Author

Born Tony McMahon in London in 1950, and interested in Buddhism and meditation since his teens, Vessantara now has 40 years of Buddhism under his belt. In 1974 he became a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order, founded by Sangharakshita. At that time he was given his Buddhist name, which means 'universe within' and is associated with generosity. He has been mining for jewels in his inner world through meditation and then sharing them with others ever since. The results include several highly-rated books on Buddhism and meditation.

In 1993 he published the very successful 'Meeting the Buddhas', which is still going strong after 20 years, but is now in its latest edition chopped into three 'Guides' - to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Tantric Deities. Other works include 'Tales of Freedom' a book of Buddhist teaching stories, and two books in Windhorse Publications' series on 'The Art of Meditation'

He lives in Cambridge UK, and spends his time teaching, leading courses and workshops on Buddhism and meditation. You can find a lot more information, articles, and details of his teaching schedule on his website at www.vessantara.net.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a reprint 12 Mar 2009
By A reader - Published on Amazon.com
This is a reprint a portion of the book "Meeting the Buddhas: A Guide to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Tantric Deities." That book contains "A Guide to the Deities of the Tantra," "A Guide to the Buddhas" and "A Guide to the Bodhisattvas" all in one volume, at a comparable price, if you'd prefer that format. The new separate editions don't seem to have been updated, as far as I can tell.
5.0 out of 5 stars About The Different Editions of This Book... 9 May 2012
By Theseus - Published on Amazon.com
This important Tony McMahon (Vessantra) book has been released in several different versions.

Windhorse Publications first published this in 1993. It was revised in the 1994 release. In 2008 they released three "new" books which simply divided the original Meeting the Buddhas into three shorter books (A Guide to the Buddhas, ...to the Deities of the Tantra, ...to the Bodhisattvas.)

There are also two hardback copies of Meeting the Buddhas you can find -- both a bit pricey.
