This book documents George Guest's life-long career directing the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge. Those who worked under his direction will know that most of what he did was instinctive and, indeed, readers will not here gain great insights into Dr Guest's choir training methods. A significant portion of the book is an amplification of the choir's touring diary over three decades, much of it surprisingly domestic and small-scale. Those little Cambridge nuggets you might hope to read - such as the inevitable struggles within College politics that surely Dr Guest must have encountered - are diplomatically absent, and the personal correspondence which he must have built up (with many people within Choir, College, University and the wider musical world) over four decades is only fleetingly touched upon. The result is a mild, two dimensional, report of a life that was surely much more colourful than this book suggests.
