Product Description

Product Description

If you long to rediscover the homespun crafts of your grandparents' era, let Nicola Gouldsmith and Jacqui Mann show you how. The techniques of yesteryear remain relevant today, with the current emphasis on thrifty living and a yearning to return to a simpler way of life. The 35 projects in this book can be endlessly adapted and will equip you with lifelong skills that you, too, can pass on. The book has seven chapters, beginning with Soap-Making, in which you can learn how to make soaps such as rose and geranium soap (especially good for mature skins) and a lavender shampoo bar. If you've always wanted to learn Patchwork and Quilting, step-by-step instructions show how to create quilted deckchair covers and a vintage denim patchwork windbreak. In the Candles chapter, you'll see how easy it is to make candles with country herbs in vintage glassware, while in Weaving, weave with fabric to make a simple cushion, or try your hand at traditional Rag Rugs. Turn to Natural Dyeing, and you'll discover recipes for vibrant and rich colours. Finally, Reinvent will inspire you to take pre-loved items and give them a new purpose.

About the Author

Nicola Gouldsmith and Jacqueline Mann met in an old soap factory in July 2009 and quickly realized that they both shared a lifelong passion for making things, growing their own and making the most of the beautiful rural surroundings in which they live. These shared passions led them to set up Halfpenny Home. Their blog is at www.halfpennyhome.blogspot.com.

crafts taster 21 Jun 2011
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
If you love the simple life and the ethics of homemade, then you'll love this book. All the crafts can be tried at home and have an emphasis on thrifty living - recycling, reusing and crafts passed down from generation to generation. Discover the basics, techniques and projects with step by step instructions. This is a great taster book for a number of crafts such as soap making, patchwork, candle making, weaving and natural dyeing. The techniques are good and seem easy to follow but I was not too keen on most of the projects. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
