Product Description

Synopsis

"A beautiful book, recommended for anyone interested in their own deep growth" - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross This classic book has never been out of print since it was first published in 1979. It has been widely acknowledged as probably the best existing text on Vipassana meditation. A simple and gently-written book, it is about Mindfulness - an ancient and accessible meditation form, with Buddhist origins. The basis of the practice is, Stephen says, "to directly participate in each moment as it occurs, with as much awareness and understanding as possible". 'A Gradual Awakening' has been important to thousands of people as a clear, basic guide to meditation, covering both the method itself and the issues arising from it. It has become a standard teaching text (along with Stephen's bestselling title, 'Who Dies?') in countless meditation centres and educational establishments, including medical schools. "Stephen Levine deals with meditation and social responsibility in a way that is neither abstract nor hollow. This is practical stuff for day-to-day living. His ability to do this comes from his own life in which he has shown a continuing sense of social consciousness."

- Ram Dass "Levine's message and service fill an essential need today." - Psychology Today. Other books by Stephen Levine Embracing the Beloved Guided Meditations, Explorations and Healings Healing into Life and Death Meetings at the Edge Who Dies?

This would be on my short list of books that have changed my life. It is a deeply personal examination of mindfulness meditation, with one of the best descriptions I have ever read of what this type of meditation can bring about in one's life. A must buy for anyone who wishes to learn to live life as it is meant to be lived.

Like the previous reviewer I think this one of the best books you are likely to find on meditation. Taken to heart this book wil change your life if you want it to. It's written in a modern, approachable syle and not only that it has a superb bibliography so you can further explore Buddhism.

Highly recommended 14 Dec 2010

I must have bought this book back in the eighties and I've yet to find anything better. I always recommend this book when asked about Buddhist meditation. This just tells you all that you need to start your journey. Truth be told this is the whole thing in one small book.
Written in crisp clear prose there's nothing mysterious here, if you want that kind of thing there'a plenty else to choose. It won't serve you as well though.
