A good confession is certainly a good read. I found it impossible to put down. I'd recommend this as a book that appeals to a wide range of readers.
The reader is carried along by the eloquent descriptions and the sharply observed depiction of its cast of Irish characters. The narrative gathers pace and tension as Catherine and Father Jerry's growing romance becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. When Father Jerry revisits his childhood home, the dangers of non-conformity are brought into focus by the potentially violent threat posed to the newly arrived Jehovah's Witnesses living on the outskirts of the Catholic Village.
If Father Jerry, the local boy made good, is discovered to be a fallen idol, how will the local community react?
Bridget Wheelan manages to skilfully draw all these threads and tensions together, creating an unexpected, but wholly satisfying ending.
