Product Description

Review

"'A beautiful book that samples the best of both traditional and contemporary lace knitting; it is a collection of patterns from a number of sources and includes biographies of the designers and a snippet of prose for each pattern. It is good to see lace patterns in a variety of yarns, both chunky and fine. All designs are charted with some suitable for beginners and others very much for the experienced lace knitter. This would make a delightful present for someone special or for yourself.' SlipKnot, Knitting & Crochet Guild, Sept '04"

Product Description

Today "lace" doesn't just mean doilies knit in very fine yarn; often the yarns are not fine and the needles large for faster knitting and greater impact. A Gathering of Lace samples the best traditional and contemporary lace knitting. This collection includes sweaters, vests, shawls, gloves and socks - some are simple enough for the new knitter while others will stimulate seasoned lacers.

Truly inspirational 11 May 2004
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is much more than a 'how to' knitting book, giving many examples of lace knitting projects with notes from the designers on how they came to produce the finished items plus tips & techniques that could be applied to much simpler knitting. From the gorgeous photography to the charming, sometimes quirky bios of the designers it's a beautifully produced book. I can see myself returning to this time and time again. If you have even the slightest interest in the art of lace knitting (though most of us would not even attempt to knit our own boat as one pioneering contributor did!) this is an essential for your reference shelf.

Errors 10 July 2008

Great book - but there are a lot of errors so check the interweave site before you cast on.

It's a shame this wasn't more carefully proof read as some of the designs are gorgeous.

Had I been able to make up my mind what to knit from this book first, no doubt I'd have given it more stars but I've held off just in case I too found errors in the patterns. Directed to this publication by the Ravelry knitting group and seen the gorgeous things that the members are turning out, I thought I'd chance my luck and I can honestly say that this is one of those rare books where every pattern is something I'm going to knit.

There's something for everyone from beginner to expert, choice of yarn weights, sizes and tips on modification for different sizes. The photography in the main is terrific in view of the fact that there has to be a combination of big projects but also has to show the fine detail of the patterns. There is a big plus because of the little gems of wisdom and quirky quotations accompanying each pattern - I did like those a lot because it somehow made the book more personal and warm. In short, it's a superb book for us knitters who want the holes in their knitting to be in some sort of impressive artistic order.
