Product Description

Miss Aurelia Trevor has a problem. Until she reaches the age of twenty-five, she will have no control over her beloved Pevensey Park, and by that time her unscrupulous uncle will have run it into the ground. Marriage to someone other than her uncle's leering son is her only way out, but, one by one, she rejects the men on her list of suitors. In desperation, Aurelia does the unthinkable. She hires a solicitor to find her a husband strong enough to stand up to both her uncle and her cousin. And soon learns the truth of that old adage: Be careful what you wish for.

Thomas Lanning is a man of the City. Unlike Aurelia, who stands to inherit vast land and wealth, he has made his own place in the world. He is not at all tempted by the suggestion of marriage to an heiress, but other considerations, such as a power base for a seat in Parliament, tweak his interest. Plus an unexpected twinge of chivalry when he hears the full extent of Miss Trevor's difficulties with her uncle and his family.

Aurelia, who only wants to live in peace on her acres, finds she has acquired a ready-made family in Thomas's younger sister and brother, as well as a head-strong husband whose campaign for MP fills her household with a shockingly odd assortment of characters. It seems her marriage of convenience is fast becoming a marriage of inconvenience. Just how far will this strong-willed pair bend to accommodate each other? And will they do it before it's too late?

Reviews:

"Blair Bancroft's warm and tender [novel] boasts a great heroine in Aurelia: She's attractive, courageous, vulnerable and intelligent."
Robin Taylor, Romantic Times

"Reading how they gradually learn to like and eventually love each other is wonderful. Blair Bancroft is now definitely one of my favorite traditional Regency authors and this book is a prime example of why."
Nicole Hulst, Romance Junkies

"Set against a backdrop of rural politics (and a fascinating look at the early world of "buying votes) this is a story that entrances, enlightens and endears."
Celia at A Romance Review

Aurelia is a young woman desperate for a way to save her estate, from her greedy relatives. To do this she asks a solicitor to find a husband for her. The person he finds is Thomas Lanning a 'cit' who actually has to work for his money. Thomas doesn't doesn't really want to marry her but does so for political reasons and because he feels sorry for her.

This is the second book by this author I have tried and again I find myself very disappointed. I really liked the story line of this book but barely a chapter in and I was tempted to rip it up. I really wanted to like it but like the first time I tried reading her novels I couldn't stand the characters. Fair enough some villains are supposed to be unlikeable but when it's the heroine and hero who you hate the most you know it's not a good book. I got to a third of the way in before i gave up.

Like in the lady silence the heroine is too arrogant for her own good, the hero is doing her a favour but all she can seem to do is find stupid ways to snap at him or start pouting, with the author frequently mentioning her lip trembling. I don't understand whether the author is trying to create tension between the characters but she just appears to be a selfish, spoilt snob. Such as in the carriage where she sits with her back to her husband, complains that he doesn't appear to like her.
Her character may improvein the book but I couldn't finish it. I just got sick of her stating how she was miles above her husband because of her birth. Then she sometimes seems to have a moment where she realises that her husband may not be that bad but then in the next sentence completely forgets about her previous revalation.

Thomas Lanning is a little better, but I don't like reading about arrogant heroes who admit they are attracted/care about the heroine but the same time still sleep around with married women while married to the heroine.

Overall an aggravating read, although I admit the writing is good but the characters awful

Regency Romance 22 July 2011
By K. F. Barnes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought this was a nice story. I found the heroine's attitude consistent (in fact, not really strong enough) for the period. Please, a shrew? This is a not unknown plot twist for the genre where the class tension creates much of the plot tension (but not all of it). The hero goes in with prejudices of his own & they work together to overcome them. There are also siblings to manage, an election to run, a sub plot romance & a few other twists. It is interesting, too, in giving a bit of detail about elections in this era. It's a good read.

I'd read most of Blair Bancroft's other books first, and I'm glad I didn't start with this one.... 15 July 2011

This really was a bit disappointing compared to Ms. Bancroft's other novels. While most romance novels feature a tension between the lead characters that leads up to their passionate love for each other...in this story the female came off pretty much as a heartless shrew who couldn't even accept that her husband was a decent guy...even though ms bancroft talked him up the whole novel. I just felt that Aurelia shouldn't have spent 95% of the novel being so opposed to him and then to all the sudden realize at the end that he was right for her and then have all that tension wrapped up in a brief epilogue. I'd suggest skipping this one in favor of her other books. I've ranked the ones I've read so far (I really really enjoyed the first one)

1. Tarleton's Wife
2. Lady Silence
3. The Harem Bride
4. The Temporary Earl
5. A Season for Love
6. A Gamble on Love
Overcoming Pre-judgements 23 Dec 2011

Bravo to Ms. Bancroft. The story is a well written tribute to overcoming ingrained prejudices against others and learning to make choices based on observation and fact. Once she gave herself time to accumulate the facts Aurelia Trevor allowed herself to acknowledge the feelings she had for husband. Her husband Thomas was, according to the rules of the ton and everything she believed in, a most improper choice. He was a Cit, a rather vulgar British name used in the same context as the vulgar names Americans use for each other. All that aside, Aurelia needed a dragon slayer and Thomas fit the bill. The author puts them through a series of situations where they each learn about the other's character. Each are always amazed that their ingrained beliefs regarding 'those people' were incorrect and each found themselves drawn to the other. This book is well worth the read. It reminds us to take a look under the polished veneer, usually dulled by our own prejudices, of each person we meet. More times than not what we see is what we get. Occasionally though, there will be the one in a million we wouldn't have missed for the world.
