Product Description

Product Description

The most fucked up memoir you’ll ever read.

A foul-mouthed memoir about a dysfunctional life.

Each chapter recounts a key moment in the author’s life through the books she was reading at the time including:

• Howard’s End, the only text she had read whilst engaging in sexual intercourse.
• The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, which she had in her bag while on holiday in Tangier when a market trader offered her to buy her from her mother for 30 camels.
• Angela’s Ashes, her chosen reading material during her breast reduction surgery.
• Wild Swans, the book she read the day she decided to have nothing more to do with her mother.

It is funny, it is shocking, it is heartbreaking, it is very rude and it is totally unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and beautiful biblio-memoir 20 May 2013

I've been a fan of the author's blog for a while - her writing is brilliantly funny, insightful and will often sucker-punch you with something truly moving. Her stories are little slices of life linked to the book she's reading at the time, from her earliest reading memories, through childhood, school, first love, terrible first jobs, sex, death, university, becoming a 'proper grown up' and her somewhat turbulent relationship with her mother. The book contains stories from the blog but also new ones that haven't been published before - and they're really really good (can't say any more!).

You will laugh out loud, cringe, cry and probably fall in love with her dad. You will also discover what happens when you read Lolita on a Megabus and why you should never read Isaac Asimov in a pub. If you want to read something with real heart, read this.

I had been looking forward to this book since she announced she was writing it . I think it's a really good read and it struck a chord with me. I hope she reads a load more books so she can write some more herself .

I loved this book,it was raw in its honesty and laugh out loud funny when I wasn't expecting to laugh ! It was great to see how a passion for books reflects a specific moment in a life. I hope she will continue to write and I would like to say that I remember exactly what was happening in my life when I read her book!

This book will not be for everyone, given its title and generous amount of swearing. However, for anyone who loves books, this memoir will be right up their street. The tale of a life in books, the author reveals the hilarious, the startling and the hurtful experiences she's been through and the books that she was reading at the time. This is a brutally honest account of the highs and lows of life. If the last few chapters don't break your heart, then you need to see a doctor to check if you still have one. I'm hoping that this is just the first installment...

Rating: 3.5*

I couldn't believe there was a book out there with said title and author! So I went online to investigate and many book review sites and blogs gave it a 5 star rating. It was evident from reviews that once one got over the initial shock, this book was a gem; funny, raw, honest, with real heart. So I purchased and downloaded it! this point some of you are probably judging me for even doing a review on so named book. So be it! I'm not going to defend my choice. I read widely. I give every book a chance and I'm glad I did with this one.

The author is a popular book blogger and twitter sensation. She is 28, works in publishing and is totally book obsessive. Yes, she swears! The profanity however does not get any worse than what you've already seen in the "title" and "author" above.

The book depicts aspects of the author's life from her early years through to adulthood. Each of the stories is retold with reference to whatever she happened to be reading at the time (books referred to are listed below).

The stories deal with family, relationships, friendship and death, with the common theme of the healing power of great bookshops, books, and people who love books (that's right Amazon friends - people like us!).

I read this book in one sitting while on a short haul flight. Some stories were great, others not so, with many alternating between cynicism and sexual indelicacy and salt-of-the-earth honesty. There were no feigned airs and graces which I found refreshing.

I did not regret buying this book. I'm glad I've read it. I wish BC all the best in her future endeavours. There's a talent here that I'm confident we'll see a lot more of.

Clever, wry, sad, realism. I recommended it to my daughter, which I think is quite weird as the mother-daughter relationship in this book is pretty upsetting. Read more
