An outstanding book 23 Aug 2004
'A Fortunate Life' is one of those rare books that you start reading, and then end up pacing yourself because you don't want it to end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about each stage of Facey's difficult life, and felt very humbled by the fact that despite so much adversity, he considered himself to have been fortunate. You will laugh as much as you'll cry when you read this book; I absolutely loved it.

Surviving hardship and adversity, a cave-in while at the bottom of an outback well, the Gallipoli Landings, and being lost in the outback for a week as a boy, surviving by chewing grass - Bert's early life was a charmed and wonderful adventure that makes compelling reading. My only disappointment was his bleak atheistic conclusions as an old man, after all he'd survived/been spared. That aside it's a riveting read and a fascinating window back into the golden age of Pioneer Australia. Highly recommended! An Australian Classic deserving of a place in any Oz fans library.

All the way through this book I had to remind myself this was a true story. A tale of great strength and great love through what would now seem unendurable circumstances and sometimes inhuman treatment, especially from his mother.
A remarkable snapshot of a life that makes us truly appreciate the comforts of our modern world.
Read and pass it on, it's too good to sit on the shelf!
