A Sweet Story 21 April 2010
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Philippa Pearce, most famous for her books Minnow on the Say and Tom's Midnight Garden, wrote this short book for her grandsons before her death. It is the story of a young boy who has lost his dog, and while searching for her in the meadow, he comes across a magical old man who is a finder, and who helps him with his quest. It is simple, pastoral, magical and beautifully told. Helen Craig has illustrated the book exquisitely with pencil line drawings that help to pull the narrative along and add vivid charm to the tale. I bought this book for my six year old daughter to read on holiday and it kept her thoroughly engrossed, after which she very kindly loaned it to me. I shall save it for my son who is too small to appreciate it now, but will love it in years to come. Highly recommended.

A bedtime treat. 20 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Till is desperate to find his dog Bess, who has gone missing.
Mr Finder, a mysterious stanger comes to help Till in his search, and along the way they meet lots of interesting characters who they hope can help .
Magic, mystery and a happy ending are all to be found in this imaginative story.
This is a beautiful illustrated book and it is such a shame that this is Philippa Pearce's last work, (died in 2006) and one that she will never get to see published.
The pictures are really inviting and make you actually feel included in the story.
A great story for adults and children to share at bedtime.
