Book Description

1 Mar 2012 Dark Lord
Sooz, a 13 yr old girl from Surrey has become the Dark Mistress of Dirk's otherworldly kingdom, the Darklands. Thanks to the Ring of Power given to her by Dirk, his minions recognize her as their ruler. Sooz immediately sets about redecorating Dirk's Dark Tower to the taste of a young girl.

But Sooz has to face her toughest challenge when an army of fanatical paladins and orcs gather to march against her. Despite their centuries of hostility to each other, they prefer to form an alliance rather than accept Sooz's new regime.

And what of Dirk? He continues on slaving away at school, plotting ways to rescue Sooz. Eventually he is able to advise her on life in the Darklands and Sooz is able to hold back the fanatical paladins.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT SEQUEL 5 April 2012
By Pollo
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I hugely enjoyed the first book in this series (The Teenage Years (Dark Lord)), but this one is better. In the first novel, which is enormous fun, much of the humour is derived from the development of the story idea - that the demonic Dark Lord of a fantasy land has been banished to Earth in the form of a teenage boy. In this new book, Jamie Thomson gives the characters a freer rein to take the story over, with startling results. The first book was largely driven by the needs of the plot, and sometimes felt a little constrained by it, although this was largely redeemed by the strength of the characters; but in the second you are more completely involved with them. In the earlier book, you see how the characters react to the bizarre sequence of events they find themselves in; in this one, it's the way they deal with events that drives and shapes how those events develop. In other words, if the first book was more plot-driven, this new one is much more character-driven. It's a measure of Jamie Thomson's skill that Dirk and his friends Sooz and Chris (especially Sooz!) engage your emotional sympathies so strongly, and that no matter how bizarre the situation they remain utterly credible and compelling. And it's no mean feat that even the most fantastical situations are somehow completely convincing. An unputdownable page-turner - at least as much fun as the first novel, and with a more involving story that leaves you clinging to the lip of an obsidian cliff. Highly recommended, whatever your age!

5.0 out of 5 stars A lively, fresh take on fantasy fiction 7 May 2012
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is the sequel to the Book: Dark Lord, The Teenage Years, although you do not have to have read the first book to make sense of what is happening in the second. Dirk is not your typical teenage boy. He is the Dark Lord of The Dark Lands, who has been trapped in the body of a mortal, teenage boy by his arch enemy, the white wizard, Hasdruban. In the first book we see Dirk struggling to come to terms with our world and the limitations of his puny, human body, with the help of his friends Christopher and Sooz. In this sequel, Sooz has accidentally been sent back to the Dark Lands instead of Dirk, and Dirk and Christopher are left trying to figure out how to rescue her, while Sooz is called upon to keep herself safe in the Dark Lands, surrounded by goblins and paladins who are out to destroy her. This is a funny and page turning book. It has a lot of traditional elements of a fantasy novel but which are turned on their heads because of the element of time travel, and also the fresh approach the author brings to the characters and their personalities. It has elements of a typical teen novel which you don't usually find in a fantasy book. Sooz is a goth chick with more than a passing interest in Dirk. Dirk struggles between wanting to sever heads and enslave mortals, and his new, human personality, and Christopher tries not to be jealous of Dirk's relationship with Sooz whilst shucking off his inner wimp. This book has a lot to recommend it and is perfect for eight years and upwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inhumanly good 10 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Dear Dirk,

I fear that your second tome has somehow ensorcelled my son. Since acquiring it for his birthday yesterday, he's spent almost all his free time reading it, neglecting several previously favoured Xbox games. This behaviour seems quite unnatural for a 12-year-old, especially an obsessive gamer.

Concerned of Wrexham

P. S. He says "If _Dirk Lloyd: The Teenage Years_ was the best book humanly possible, then _Dirk Lloyd: A Fiend In Need_ is the best book inhumanly possible."
