"The mystery and fantasy slowly draw together, bonded by supreme characterization, to make for a story which is almost impossible to put down."
--Reviewers Bookwatch

As a child, dog-loving Brenna Fallon naívely invokes an ancient Celtic deity to save her beloved hound--and inadvertently anchors the new-found power at a spring on her family's farm.

She doesn't know she's also left an opening for a far more malevolent force.

Years later, thanks to the actions of several angry young men, Brenna discovers the terrible potential of that gateway. With a devastating plague unfolding abruptly around her, she must depend on her wits, a stranger she doesn't trust, and a mysterious stray dog who becomes more than just a faithful companion as she struggles to drive back the threat of a modern Black Death.

Welded by a desperate sacrifice, woman, man, and dog face the feral darkness together.

"If you are looking for a book that has paranormal elements and some romance, is expertly written with wonderful characters and has a smooth pace that leads up to a climatic finish, A FERAL DARKNESS is the book for you and it is not to be missed."
--The Romance Reader's Connection

"This is a very smart, well-woven book, with an initially cranky but ultimately endearing hero and a thoroughly satisfying ending."
--Mary Jo Putney, bestselling author of the The Rake

More About the Author

Doranna's quirkiness of spirit has led to an eclectic publishing journey since that her first award-winning novel, spanning genres over 40 novels to include mystery, SF/F, action-romance, paranormal, franchise, and a slew of essays and short stories.

Beyond that, mostly she still prefers to hang around outside her New Mexico mountain home with the animals, riding dressage on her Lipizzan and training for performance sports with the dogs. She doesn't believe so much in mastering the beast within, but in channeling its power. For good or bad has yet to be decided...

4.0 out of 5 stars From pagan gods to puppies this book has it all. 31 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A Feral Darkness by Doranna Durgin tell the story of Brenna, an overworked pet groomer, whose reality is about to change drastically. When Brenna was a young girl she had a dog who was on his last leg. She did not want her dog to die so she researched ways to help. She found out about an old god that was said to favor canines and made an offering of her most precious possession, her hair. That dog had a good long life after that offering and was buried by the "shrine" that she had made her sacrifice at earlier in life. Years later some people come and defile that sacred spot. Not necessarily out of malice for the site, just drunken idiocy. That defamation brings the attention of a darker force to the site.

Today Brenna lives on her family's farm land renting out fields for others to grow crops on and working at a large pet store chain as a groomer. She always kept her dog's grave and the shrine area clear out of love for her childhood companion. Rumors of a pack of wild dogs in the area begin to circulate and it becomes dangerous for Brenna to out at night. One day she finds a very frightened corgi on her front porch. The dog's tag says his name is Druid and Brenna immediately begins to fall for him. Druid's strange behavior leads her to talk to Gil Masera, a dog trainer who recently began classes at her store. These two characters take Brenna on a journey to figure out what really happened all those years ago with her offering to save her dog and what force of darkness was brought about by the defilement of the sacred shrine.

This book was a pretty fantastic read. The level of suspense was kept pretty high throughout and even though I had suspicions of what was going on I was never really sure.

I received this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers Program

I really enjoyed this book (despite having a phobia of dogs!)

The characterisation is subtle and perfectly done; Brenna is realistic and likeable, her personality growing organically from the background she is given. The people around her are equally well drawn and nuanced, as are the pets. The plot progressed at a comfortable pace, neither rushing nor dragging, and the supernatural revelations unfolded gradually. Really, I couldn't fault it at any point!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable doggy yarn 26 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
An enjoyable and well-written tale (or should that be tail?!!) although not being a 'doggy' person I felt it had perhaps a bit too much detail on our canine friends.

As someone else said, this is quite an unusual story which doesn't fit naturally into any particular genre, although supernatural mystery might be the closest. It is a tale of good versus evil, and is definitely a 'feel good' story with a satisfactory ending.

Worth a read, especially if you are into dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual but very enjoyable tale 19 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure what type of story this was going to be, and after reading I still don't know what category it is! There is a romance, suspense elements, paranormal threads....a whole lot going on. All of the themes were blended seamlessly to make for an enjoyable whole. The plot was unpredictable and well-paced. I got this for Free, but would have been happy to have paid for it as I have enjoyed it so much. It is well edited, without the numerous errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation which are often found in freebies.
