Carl Larsson's 'A Farm', Paintings from a Bygone Age
In a landscape sketchbook shape, the hardback book has a dust cover replicating the illustration on the board cover. This is the Larsson family who are happily apple picking, two children gathering the rosy fruit into baskets with the red painted walls of their farm (`Spadarvet', Sunborn, in West Sweden) glowing in the background; colour then picked up by one child's cheery red tasselled cap. Karin is advancing toward her little girls with more baskets. For lovers of the Larsson's this is a familiar image.
This is one of three Floris books. The others are
A Family: Paintings from a Bygone Ageand
A Home: Paintings from a Bygone Age. Each are beautifully organised with explanatory text on the left hand page and the artwork on the right. Of this subject Carl has written: " I will paint the whole farm, everything there is to see. I will paint when we sow and harvest, and when we pick apples in the autumn, and when we plough and harrow, and when we dig ditches in the spring".
Family history that accompanies the gorgeous pictures brings them to sharper focus and provides a deeper enjoyment. What fun to know that the cow, from the late 1890's, is sweetly named `Blossom' for example?
The how and why and when are all detailed. This book would also work well as a child's introduction to Carl Larsson, life in rural Sweden and the seasons. Carpentry, Fishing and their Church community are extra aspects of life on the farm.
The final painting, of the Christmas Eve Feast, is the most lavish and rich. Even the cat is shown under the table hoping for a little turkey to fall. What a wonderful reward for the year of work.
