Product Description

Claire Simons is desperate to host a normal family get-together for Christmas.

The trouble is, she just doesn't have a normal family.

After fifteen years of marriage, her husband Gregg has walked out on her for Verity, an ambitious, young woman who wears startlingly short skirts.

When her daughter Sadie throws a classic pre-teen strop about not being able see her father on Christmas Day, Claire decides she may have to put the past behind her - and resolves they must all spend the day together as a family.

After blaming herself for months for stifling Gregg's free-spirit, and pushing him away, Claire decides she ready to face him and let go of her pain and anger.

But when Robert Carrington, a new manager at her work, comes to her rescue when Sadie goes missing, Claire starts to wonder if she's ready to let a new relationship into her life.

Very soon, the guest list for Claire's Christmas is getting longer and longer - and more and more complicated.

Can she keep the peace for just one day?

Or will it all go wrong in this Family Affair?

'A Family Affair' is a hilarious family drama about love, sacrifices and fractured families. It was previously published as 'The Fight Before Christmas'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fight Before Christmas 26 Nov 2013

Claire Simons is trying to hold it all together over the Christmas holidays, but is still getting over her ex husband and trying to keep her children from getting too upset about the fact that there family won't all be together this year. To make things special for them she decides to suck up her pride and invite Gregg, her ex-husband, for a family dinner. Little does she know that things will spiral out of control when more and more family members decide to show up and join in the festive celebrations... I am a big fan of Frankie McGowan's books and this latest Christmas novella didn't disappoint!

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Chaos!!! 26 Nov 2013

I really felt for Claire in this book - Christmas can be stressful at the best of times, let alone trying to get over the breakdown of a marriage, trying to be civil to your ex so your children can still see him over the holidays, and dealing with demanding parents and in-laws! This book was hilarious in parts and very moving in others. Definitely a good way to get into the festive spirit!

I'd read another Frankie McGowan before - this one was rather predictable but I still enjoyed it and would recommend her books to other readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars the day after new year 2 Jan 2014

read it quite quickly, enjoyed it, but feel that the anticipated angst (the title suggested more) was not supported in words. Would probably read more of Frankie's work, especially if descriptive sections are enlarged. Reading a book should not feel the same as reading an abbreviated magazine story, and I would therefore have liked to be challenged/offended/depressed etc by extended prose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read!! 20 Dec 2013

This is the first book I've read by Frankie McGowan and it will certainly not be the last. I would like a sequel telling us what happened next with Claire,Robert and her parents. If I had one criticism I would of liked a longer story and not included the first chapter of her new book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Chistmas Comedy! 13 Dec 2013
This is the first book I have read by Frankie Mcgowan and I am glad to say this won't be the last. What a lovely find this book is. I really enjoyed it. The book is about Claire trying to hold things together after being dumped by her selfish husband Gregg for a much younger Verity. The book also has Claire dealing with plans for Chistmas itself including Gregg, her father Jeffrey and his new Thai younger wife, her mother in law - Liz, along with the kids - Ben and Sadie. The story is situated in a small place and community called Upton Wick in Wiltshire (does such a place exist?). The story also has the very interesting and Claire's love interest - Robert Carrington, Claire's boss which sends her ex-Gregg dropping Verity and chasing back after Claire. Thankfully Claire appears to have moved on emotionally and the story finishes with some very comical scenes in the climax. I thoroughly recommend this book, its very well written and quite funny!
