Following the adventures of a brother and sister expedition to deepest Africa. Retracing the footsteps of their failed, missing Father, Zouga and Robyn trek into the African heartland's, each with there own goal. This book sets the pace for a great series following the Ballantyne family. Split into the tales of the brother and sister, this book is both refreshing and compelling. With adventures taking place on the seas and mainland, this book is fictionally spellbinding and together with Smith's factual knowledge of the Continent, a truly good read.

Dull 6 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I am a fan of Wilbur Smith and have enjoyed a lot of his books. If you have read any of his work before, you will recognise the familar stories featuring action, adventure and romance. This one takes you on an adventure through Africa in the mid 19th Century towards the end of the slave trade.

However, the characters are dull and the story is all a bit cheesy. I plodded through half the book to get to any decent story, before it all tailed off again. Wilbur always does his research, and I suppose I know a lot more about 19th century medicine and the slave trade than I did. But's it's all just a bit dull. If you do insist on reading it, prepare your self for detailed accounts of various deseases, gruesome operations, starvation and drawn out deaths.

For a better adventure story, read The Seventh Scroll or The Blue Horizon, which are both much better.
