Reading a debut novel can be like eating an unfamiliar meal in a completely new restaurant - you either love it enough to go back there or you, not only avoid it, but tell others to avoid it too! Happily, in the case of 'A Discerning Woman's Guide to Manhunting', I am already booking a table for next week! This was a 'laugh-out-loud' account of a mature woman's search for a man with all she needs - and, boy, is she discerning! Her list of 'must haves' and 'must nots' in a man reads like an NHS guide to prosthetics - no (gall) stone is left unturned!
Strictly speaking, (due to the heroine's age) this is not chick-lit, but when those 'chicks' grow up, Geri Jones will be waiting for them, having been there, done that and probably helped design the T shirt.
The one-liners are original and sassy enough to become catchphrases in the next few years. However, Geri and her fellow characters wear enough credibility to become 'real' people and I read the book hoping that some of my favourite characters would have a change of heart (though I won't give away too much by saying more about that).
The real gem here is that 'A Discerning Woman..' is ripe for developing into a film of the same ilk as 'Notting Hill' and 'Four Weddings'. With Bill Nighy as Ted, Martin Shaw as Clifford and Robert Blythe (High Hopes) as Gwyn, this could be one of the most entertaining 'funnies' to grace our screens. Given the added appeal to any age of viewer, I think it would be a storming success.
My only complaint is that I'm going to have to wait before author, Bel Roberts, comes up with another masterpiece!
