Product Description

The Valley Advocate

Looking for the folk album of the year? Hands down, it's Emily Smith's A Different Life .

CD Description

Dumfriesshire born singer Emily Smith first made her mark on the Scottish music scene when she won the 2002 BBC Radio Scotland's Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year Award. In the same year she formed her own band and has since toured throughout Europe and Australasia. In 2003 Emily graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with an Honours degree in Scottish music. During this time she developed her skills on piano and accordion and established her own singing style drawing on the many sources available to her. Emily has a warm and open stage manner and these same characteristics shine through in her musicianship. Her voice blends delicacy with surprising power and is equally alluring whether enriched by instrumental backing or unaccompanied. With an imaginative approach to instrumental arrangements she gives a contemporary edge to ancient songs. As well as performing with her band Emily has worked with performers such as John McCusker, Karine Polwart and Irish band North Cregg. She has also been included in the acclaimed 'Scottish Women' group featuring Scotland s top female vocalists and is a member of Scotland s 'folk orchestra' - The Unusual Suspects

Lovely 21 Jan 2009
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album after seeing Emily live and I wasn't disappointed.

She has a beautifully clear and melodic voice that suits her mix of songs well, from the traditional Edward of Morton to the more modern Always a Smile.

With a similar production style to other female singers of her generation (i.e. Kate Rusby et al) the album is well produced and a joy to listen to.

My favourites include Will You Go to Town (a happy toe-tapping tune that you find yourself singing along to) and Strong Winds For Autumn (a beautiful haunting song).

I would recommend it to folkies and non-folkies alike.

Change your life with a differnt life maybe a bit over enthusiastic, however this is an album which will certainly bring you a great deal of pleasure. Emily Smith is fast becoming a firm favourite within the folk set. She deserves to be listened to by a everyone. This disc plays well no matter the mood. I listen to it in the office, in the car and regularly at home. The clarity of voice and the clearly defined sound is amazing for this her second album. Five stars is not over the top it is justified.

I bought this on the back of buying her latest album which is 5stars. This is good but nowhere near her best.
