This is an excellent addition to Buzzcocks body of work. "A Different Compilation" is the re-recording "of 24 of the band's best loved and iconic songs", "The original records now sound like demos", says Pete Shelley. "These new versions, honed by years on the road, showcase the songs as we know they should be, the way we know audiences love to hear them."

Well Neishy baby some of us like those "demo's" just the way they are, especially Boredom and Breakdown, the low-fi production, the Woolies guitar and their "sophisticated innocence". What works and works really well is the new versions of the classic singles "Orgasm Addict", "What Do I Get", "I Don't Mind", "Love You More" and "Ever Fallen In Love (with Someone You Shouldn't've)?" the guitar has never sound buzzier. New life is found in "Why Can't I Touch It?" and the version of "Love Is lies" (with bells added?), both are excellent. As is Diggle's "When Love Turns Around You", "Why She's A Girl From The Chainstore" and "Turn Of The Srcew". I thought the re-mastered version of A Different Kind Of Tension vastly improved a flawed (production wise) classic but the versions of "I Don't Know What To Do With My Life" and "You Say You Don't Love Me" raise them to a new level.

So why only 4 stars, well some of it doesn't quite come off, homogeneous production lets some of the tracks down "Alive Tonight" loses its subtlety. With "Promises" the speed and intensity is certainly not lacking but what is Pete doing with the line "The fact is you never really cared"? Here faster is not better."Harmony In My Head" Steve goes all rock star on us and on "I Believe" I believe it loses its giest when it substitutes Pete's demonic "There is no love in this world anymore" for fiddling with the bass and guitar. And don't even get me started on what they done to the bass on "What Ever Happened To?" or the drumming and Steve's vocal on "Autonomy" (Joe Strummer's favourite Buzzcocks song).

Spacing between songs is kept to a minimum to give that live feel and quibbles aside I enjoyed listening to them "live" from the studio. So in summary buy it and wallow in the glory and use the skip button when you feel the need.

This is obviously a "live" studio recording with occasional vocal overdubs, if this had been a "proper" live album it would be 5 stars all the way, but it's an as they were meant to sound on record, but all we get is guitars cranked up to eleven and Ramones speed, "You say you don't love me" which made an old girlfriend cry in 1979 just zooms past removing every iota of the emotional power of the original studio version, perhaps the only saving grace is that the Diggle songs (which I never really rated) sound slightly better, all in all I think it is an insult to memories of magnificent production of the two Martin's, Hanett and Rushent, who turned fantastic songs into classics.
