More About the Author

Carole Matthews is the bestselling author of more than 25 hugely successful romantic comedy novels. Her unique sense of humour has won her legions of fans all over the world.

Her books, A Cottage by the Sea and Calling Mrs Christmas have both appeared in the top ten of the Sunday Times bestseller list. Her novels Welcome To The Real World and Wrapped Up In You were shortlisted for the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year award. She was also inducted into The Festival of Romance Hall of Fame for her outstanding contribution to romantic fiction.
Carole is a prolific writer of short stories, featuring in several anthologies, and has presented on television. She's also a regular radio guest.

Born in St Helens, Merseyside, Carole has always been an avid reader and dreamed of being a teacher, an air traffic controller, a travel guide or a hairdresser - writer never featured once. Leaving Liverpool for London after a torrid holiday romance in Torquay, she worked as a secretary, an ice-cream lady, a shop assistant and a beauty therapist. It was when she was working in a completely mad holistic clinic that she first thought 'one day I should write a book about this.' She still hasn't got round to it.

Entering a short story competition in Writing Magazine, the first fiction she'd written since being coerced into it at school, Carole - to her and everyone else's amazement - won a thousand pounds! Then - to her and everyone else's amazement - she spent the money, not on shoes and handbags, but on a writing course. The tutor on the course liked what she was writing and recommended an agent who took her on straight away. He sold her first book, which became Let's Meet on Platform 8, a week later.

Previously very unlucky in love, she now lives happily ever after with her partner, Lovely Kev, at Matthews' Towers in the Costa del Keynes. She likes to drink champagne, eat chocolate, bake cake and spends far too much time on Facebook and Twitter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down! 6 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover
I couldn't put this book down! "A cottage by the sea" is the latest book by Carole Matthews. It tells the story of 2 friends, (Grace and Flick) and their partners who decide to spend a holiday in a cottage by the sea which is owned by their mutual friend Ella. During that week the lives of these 3 young women change forever - forcing them to make decisions will be made that will change the course of their lives forever. Will their friendship see them through what will probably be the most challenging week of their lives?
Is there a happy ending? You'll have to read the book and find out!
The book had me laughing one minute and wanting to cry the next - because of how involved I became with the characters. By the time I had finished the book, I felt that Ella, Grace and Flick had a 4th member of their friendship group - me! Even though I had only known these women 3 days (yes, it only took me 3 days to read it), I felt as if I had know them a life time!
It was a fantastic read and I really enjoyed it. Carole Matthews wonderfully re-creates the power of the South Wales coast line so much so you can taste the salt on your lips and feel the wind ruffle your hair. I would recommend it to anyone wants a book that will keep them absorbed right to the very end. All I can hope for is a sequel as I want to know what happens to Ella, Flick and Grace.

By Shazjera TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
A Cottage by the Sea begins with Grace and husband Harry's journey to the cottage. We find out that Harry is not pleased to be spending his holiday in Wales and from Grace we learn the history of the girls' friendships ... and where her relationship is with Harry. Safe and predictable in the past, Grace is questioning herself and the expectations of others ... and also comparing Harry now to how he used to be.

Art and Ella are the artistic couple. Ella is an artist and Art a Band Manager. Ella wants to settle down but Art is often on tour and still has one-night stands.

As soon as Flick arrives with new partner Noah, tensions and attraction come into force.

During the week at Cwtch Cottage, as well as the friendships and romance, the reader gets to go on some exciting water sport adventures and walks. Coasteering is definitely something I will only ever experience vicariously!

We see everything through Grace's point of view as she is our first person narrator. An only child, her thoughts are littered with `should' and `ought' (stereotypical of trying to please others and be what they want you to be). During the week we see her beliefs tested time and again yet she stays true to her values. Grace provokes admiration! It was so right that she made a decision that was based on her own needs.

I loved the close bond and acceptance Grace, Ella and Flick have for each other. They knew each other so well and didn't make judgements, acknowledging and accepting the shadow side. It was so easy to be a part of their friendship!

The underlying currents of tension and the electricity of attraction takes us on some terrifying and exhilarating paths. There is crises and secrets but alongside this is Matthews' indomitable humour.

1.0 out of 5 stars good for clearing the mind 16 Nov 2013
By RML
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In a mind numbing kind of way. Unfortunately boring and predictable. I just wanted to give the lead character a slap and tell her to get a grip! I'm a big fan of a chick-lit, but this was even too much for me. There is far too much moping about, and nothing happens until 3/4 of the way in (by which time you've seen it coming anyway.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner!! 6 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
A great story from one of the best writers around. Carole has the ability of drawing you into the story of Grace, Flick and Ella and their holiday at the 'Cottage by the Sea', so much so that you feel like you are actually living it yourself. Funny, romantic read, a book that you never want to put down. Carole researches well for her books and never fails to delight with her stories. I have read all of Carole's books and look forward to the next one. Well done yet again, another winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Addictive Read.... 10 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read (nearly) all of Carole Matthews' books. This one is written with a new style which really suited the storyline and the personalities of the characters. It is a real page turner with a strong character base and is both enjoyable, unpredictable and emotional !! If you haven't read any of Carole's books before you can read this one first as it features a new set of characters. Well done Carole, another winner.
