Product Description

Review

I succumbed, stunned and seduced, page after page, vocal with delight. A masterwork of comedy (New York Times )

A fine funny novel. This is the kind of book one wants to keep quoting from (Anthony Burgess )

Every reviewer has loved it. For once, everyone is right (Rolling Stone )

Product Description

'This city is famous for its gamblers, prostitutes, exhibitionists, anti-Christs, alcoholics, sodomites, drug addicts, fetishists, onanists, pornographers, frauds, jades, litterbugs, and lesbians . . . don't make the mistake of bothering me.'

Ignatius J. Reilly: fat, flatulent, eloquent and almost unemployable. By the standards of ordinary folk he is pretty much unhinged, too. But is he bothered by this?

No. For this misanthropic crusader against an America fallen into vice and ignorance has a mission: to rescue a naked female philosopher in distress. And he has a pirate costume and hot-dog cart to do it with . . .

spoilers ahead :) 8 May 2012
By Theresa
To write a review about John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces" is very hard, because I haven't yet decided whether I liked the book or not.
Anyway...let's start with the book's content (Look out! Spoilers ahead!!)

The title fits the story, because there really is "A Confederacy of Dunces" consisting of Ignatius and well, everybody else.
The main character of the book is Ignatius J Reilly. He is a fat, intelligent, flatulent, erudite, eloquent, perverse, unemployed in his mid 30s, who still lives with his mother. Toole describes Ignatius's failures in life. Due to a sudden need for money Ignatius' mother forces him to find a job. His search for an appropriate job turns out to be more difficult than expected, because Ignatius is the very opposite of a hard-working professional. Curiously, his imperfection and incompetence sets wrong things right throughout the novel.

Ignatius' story is the strange story of the failed life of a weird anti-hero. The end seems almost too perfect and Hollywood-like, because he "gets the girl", all bad characters get their punishment and he starts a new life.

Neither could I identify with any of the characters nor did I like anyone of them in particular. They all seem unreal and they all have their little ticks of weirdness. But... aren't we all weird and abnormal in our own way? I mean....what is normal?
I can't understand why Toole chose this kind of character to be the protagonist. On the one hand you only want Ignatius to suffer because he is just plain stupid, but on the other hand he can't help being the way he is, can he? He is as (im-)perfect as each and every one of us.

A hard-to-judge-book with unusual characters and a completely new perspective of things combined with a fabricated ending.
