Product Description

Product Description

This beautiful book explores the development of architecture around the world from the ancient civilisations of Egypt and the Near East through the Industrial Revolution. It presents a diverse series of building styles and architectural detailing which will fascinate and delight everyone who is interested in buildings and how they have developed over the years. The book is illustrated with drawings and beautifully detailed engraved plates. Most of these are from early sources, and their extended captions provide a comprehensive naming of architectural elements. The captions are also a useful guide to architectural terminology. The book is a must for anyone interested in the story of architecture.

This book is virtually identical to "The Grammar of Architecture" by the same authors, which is available at a cheaper price through Amazon. Like its Siamese twin, this book is badly let down by not crediting and giving bibliographical reference to the sources of the fine engravings used. This is tremendously frustrating for readers like myself who are interested in seeking out the original publications and, in many cases, accessing better quality versions of the engravings which are poorly reproduced in this book. Some of the reproduced illustrations have been so much reduced in size that valuable detail is lost. No indication is provided of buildings which have been destroyed or seriously damaged since the original 18th and 19th century artwork was produced. Neither are fanciful reconstructions differentiated from existing buildings in the antiquarian illustrations. Moreover, buildings are often shown without identifying them specifically. This fatally flawed publication is not a patch on Banister Fletcher's 'A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method.'

I bought this book because of my fascination with the diverse historic architecture around us, I am not an architect.
This book is almost the width of A4, most pages have 3-7 line drawings with descriptive text.

Reviews Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Persia, India, China, Japan, Pre-Columbian, Pre-Classical, Greece, Rome, Early Christian, Byzantine, Islamic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Palladianism, Neo Classical, Picturesque.
As a nice touch some pages have large line drawing watermarks.

There is a rich and splendid heritage of old architecture all around us, I find the book is an attractive guide.
