I thought this book was amazing, and I don't say that often. For me the dialogue is one of the best parts of the novel, after reading crap like my best friend's girl it was refreshingly real and uncomplicated. The narrator of the story is around my age and I could really relate to her character, a lot of her thoughts really rung true for me.
I loved the way Toews paints a picture of family life, and the way the two sisters interact is great, complex and realistic. The book is often very funny, and also moving in places. The twist at the end (showing why her mum left) is perhaps a little bit contrived, but I think it works reasonably well. A lot of books I have liked don't end well, but I think this one does, and I wanted to keep reading. I've only had it a couple of months and I've already read it twice, and enjoyed it even more the second time which I think is the sign of a good book.
It reminded me a bit of the catcher in the rye and vernon god little, so if you liked them I would recommend this even more. I can't really think of anymore to say, except buy this book!! I love it, it's the kind of book I'd love to write. It's never boring, it's funny, sad, and really makes you think.
