Not a book for reading cover to cover, but one that is essential for finding out more details about the fittings, architectural terms and oddities found in England's wealth of church buildings.Well-illustrated, and the explanations are written in clear everyday English.

Great Reference Work 7 Oct 2007
By Anna Richenda - Published on Amazon.com
Stephen Friar's book is absolutely wonderful and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is a comprehensive layman's reference book, A-Z, packed full of great information and important details concerning the English church from the middle ages through to today. Accessible, interesting, engaging, and the perfect tool for filling in the gaps and 'what is' questions about everything from croziers to gargoyles to lych-gates and more... Thank you Mr. Friar!
