Book Description

29 Mar 2012

They were originally five.

Elliot. Brian. Tallis. Cameron. And Dylan: the mediator, the man each one went to in a time of crisis. Five close friends, bonded in college and close ever since, still coming together for a once-yearly trip to Las Vegas.

This time round, their twelfth annual get-together, they are not just bound by a common tradition, but by a common loss: that of Dylan, tragically taken in a road accident the previous year.

However, what is intended as a joyous celebration of Dylan's life soon turns sour. Upon arrival in Vegas, the four remaining friends each receive an envelope; one that contains evidence of their guiltiest secrets:

A fraud. A cover up. An affair. An assault. Secrets that haunt their owners individually, yet were only known collectively by one person - Dylan. This man had another, hidden side - one that is now haunting them from beyond the grave.

Why would Dylan want these secrets unearthed? And who is digging them up for him? And, more importantly, what is it going to take for them to be reburied?

'Tightens around the reader like a vice ... Makes most other psychological thrillers seem simple-minded' The Australian.

'A potent story of secrets, love, friendship and the bonds that keep people close ... Brimming with blackmail and deception, Tranter's second novel does not disappoint' Australian Bookseller & Publisher.

'A seductive thriller' Lady.

From the Back Cover

They were originally five. Elliot. Brian. Tallis. Cameron. And Dylan - charismatic Dylan - the mediator, the man each one turned to in a time of crisis. Five close friends, bonded in college, still coming together for their annual trip to Las Vegas. This year they are four. Four friends, sharing a common loss: Dylan's tragic death. A common loss that, upon their arrival in Vegas, will bring with it a common threat: one that will make them question who their departed friend really was, and whether he was ever worthy of their grief. A Common Loss is Kirsten Tranter's follow-up to her glorious debut, The Legacy. Yet again, Tranter's weave of watertight prose and literary sensibilities show her to be a born writer with a precocious control of storytelling and style.

By I Readalot TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is my first experience of reading Kirsten Tranter although I am aware that her debut novel `The Legacy' was acclaimed by critics and readers alike, if it is half as good as `A Common Loss' then I can see why.

Elliot, Brian, Tallis, Cameron and Dylan became friends at college and formed a tight bond, especially after they had been involved in a car accident together. After leaving college they go their separate ways but for the past 11 years they have met up for a reunion in Las Vega which forms the perfect back drop for the this story of grief, friendship, deceit, intrigue and Blackmail. For this reunion everything has changed, Dylan has been killed in a road accident and the remaining 4 are still coming to terms with the tragedy. He was the central character of the group; the one the others went to when in trouble. Elliot, Brian, Tallis and Cameron all have secrets and Dylan is the only person who knew them all, secrets which if revealed could ruin their lives. They become paranoid when each of them receive an envelope containing information which they believed had died with Dylan. Elliot is the narrator and the story unfolds through his eyes, but just how reliable a narrator is he? Gradually he begins to wonder just how well he really knows his friends, particularly Dylan when he discovers by chance that he too had a secret, unknown to any of them.

`A Common Loss' is a carefully plotted and intriguing story that I read over a couple of days. It is beautifully written with believable characters, I can't say that I found any of them particularly likeable but I was drawn into their stories and wanted to know what happened. A central character of course is Las Vegas itself and I cannot see this story working so well if it had been set anywhere else. A tense psychological drama that is literary but also highly readable. Should appeal to fans of Donna Tartt's 'Secret History'.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment 14 Jun 2012

Having enjoyed 'The Legacy' I had high hopes for this novel. It was, however, very disappointing.I assumed at first that the narrator was female and I never felt that Ms Tranter was speaking with an authentic male voice. The characters were more like caricatures and I did not engage with any of them. The plot seemed very contrived. Overall it was disappointing because she writes really well and can do much better.
