Product Description

"A breathless literary experience...", "An unforgettable book...", "One of the most powerful books I have ever read..."

A Cleansing of Souls was written in 1991 when the author was just 22 years old and was his first full length work.

Michael Parrish woke up in bed with his sister, Jennifer. He was seventeen years old. She was fourteen and dead. There was a smell of dread in the air.

What do you honestly do at times like this?
What do you honestly do?

Well, Michael, he just grinned. And he kept on grinning. They took him away to the psychiatric hospital up on the hill. He was there for twenty-eight days; time enough, they thought, to get inside his head, his mind and his soul. But a thousand years would not have been enough - not for Michael Parrish.

So they let him go.
And he floats and he floats.

But time catches up with us all...

More About the Author

Stuart Ayris was born in the Summer of 1969 in Dagenham, just on the border of East London. School was largely unproductive, leading to his early adult years being spent putting up stalls at Romford Market, working in a record shop, gardening and road sweeping.

After resigning from an insurance company to play in a band, he found himself unemployed for two years in the early nineties. It was during this time, at the age of 22, that he wrote his first novel - A Cleansing of Souls. He wrote his second novel, Tollesbury Time Forever (FRUGALITY: Book 1), between 2008 and 2011. Both novels were made available for download to Kindle in early 2012. His third novel - The Bird That Nobody Sees (FRUGALITY: Book 2) - was released in July 2012. The final book in the FRUGALITY Trilogy - I Woke Up This Morning - was released in April 2013.

Stuart is currently writing his latest book - The Buddhas of Borneo - which he hopes to release by the end of the Summer. This will be followed by Working Man's Taxi which has a tentative release date of December 2013.

In terms of writing, his heroes are Jack Kerouac, John Steinbeck, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read novel 6 Sep 2007
This book is captivating from beginning to end. The characters were so realistic they engaged me immediately and I just had to know what was was going to happen to them next. I don't normally read books of this genre but although the novel dealt with some dark aspects of society, these aspects were cleverly explored by the author to produce a challenging and thought provoking novel. However, despite some dark moments in the novel there is a strong message running throughout of hope and there are some extremely touching moments. This novel is a must read and in a word - exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this, it is a must read! 12 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book, so much so that when I finished it I wanted to go back to the beginning and read it all over again. I did actually re-read some of it as the writing was so beautiful it moved me to tears on several occasions. OK, I didn't just cry, I did some proper sobbing. I feel privileged to have stumbled across Stuart Ayris and although I am giving this book a 5 star review, I do not think this can really convey how outstanding this book really is. A Cleansing of Souls has touched my soul. What else can I say. A Masterpiece!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonder. 31 Aug 2007
The book was really good, very different from any other book i have ever read, as the language does not follow the typical route of other writters. It is the first book that does not make life out to end happily ever after, as i think we all know that things in life do not always have a happy ending and i felt the ending of this book was one of peace. A truly enspiring book the writer has a great future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read 30 Sep 2007
I originally bought this novel to read on the train, so a bit each day until i had finished it, however after nearly missing my stop i realised that i wasnt going to be able to do this, the book is instantly gripping and i ended up reading it all in one go, that very night. The characters are very complex and you just want to know more about them as soon as possible, about what makes them the way they are. Strong plot and a promising author not afraid to say how things are, one to look out for i feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing wisdom 22 Jan 2012
By Ignite TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
I was very surprised to read that the author wrote this when aged only 22. It is a very mature piece of writing and details the stories of two damaged people as they briefly meet then go their separate ways. Stuart Ayris shows amazing wisdom and a depth of feeling in his work and his characterisations which touch the reader deeply but fall well short of being sentimental.

Tom is going through the angst of a young man, his parents through mid-life and job loss and the loss of their younger child. Poor Michael, a really lovely character, cannot shake himself free of his memories.

This is another unforgettable book from a talented new author. I really look forward to his next published work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Uplifting And Tender Novel 10 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A Cleansing Of Souls is an unusual novel. The setting is both grounded and real but also magical and ethereal. Ayris seems to possess a magic looking glass. He presents the reader with everyday situations and then shows the truth behind them. This draws you in and you find his insights FEEL right. Ayris deals with subjects such as loneliness, regret, unrequited love, mental illness with tenderness and indeed wisdom.

A book about never losing a moment of this precious thing we call life. Other authors hint at insight and tremblingly lead you to the edge of the cliff face that is the human condition. Ayris boldy leaps off it and would have you follow smiling and yearning for more. A brave novel that will move you and will make you think. By no means a perfect novel and there are one or two loose ends but with this excellent work of literary fiction it is the journey that is of most importance. Highly recommended - for those seeking insight as opposed to action.

After reading Tollesbury I just had to read this book as well. I'm so glad I did, this is another one that will stay with me for a long time. I only wish real life didn't get in the way, because once I start to read one of this author's book's I do not like putting them down.

This is a book not to be missed.

Looking forward to your next book,Stuart.

Thankyou for another excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathlessly beautiful 6 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The is a beautifully written account of loss and psychiatric breakdown. Painful to read at times, but always with gorgeous prose. You are drawn into the world of the characters and their distress, sometimes reaching a resolution, and sometimes not.
I heartily recommend this book, not for a comfortable read, but for a breathless literary experience.
