Product Description

Product Description

Christmas would not be the same without the most famous Christmas story ever written. Its central character, Ebeneezer Scrooge, is the meanest, most miserly and most miserable person in the whole world. However, he is surrounded by many other characters who veritably bubble over with life, warmth and the cheery spirit of Christmas. These include Bob Cratchit, the kindest and most forgiving of men, and various 'ghosts of Christmas' who come to visit Scrooge in the night. "A Christmas Carol" has been filmed twice as "Scrooge" with Seymour Hicks in the 1935 film and Alistair Sim as Scrooge in 1951. In 2001 an animated version of "A Christmas Carol" was also released, and "A Muppet Christmas Carol" was a surprise hit. A new movie starring Jim Carrey releases December 2009.

Is there a more famous fictional Christmas story than this one? The central character Ebeneezer Scrooge, seems to have become the fictional archetype for miserly behaviour. Scrooge is loathed by everyone, has no friends, seeks no company, and is a by-word for meanness, his only love being the hoarding of money. Scrooge is haunted one Christmas eve, by three ghostly visitations, represention the past, present and future of Scrooge's life. The stage is set for one of the great Dickens stories, a story that beautifully evokes the atmosphere of the period. The story is sometimes magical, sometimes sad, sometimes sinister, sometimes funny and full of wonderful characters. This is a human story that resonates down the ages. Martin Jarvis is one of the most versatile and experienced audiobook readers, and has many recordings and radio broadcasts to his credit. Jarvis has recorded many Dickens audiobooks over the years, as well as childrens classics such as Just William and Wind in the Willows. There are some audiobook readers who may put a more theatrical or dramatic slant on Dickens, but as a vocal entertainer, Jarvis is hard to beat.
