More About the Author

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

Book Description

Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

A beautiful book that after years of wanting to read has finally been achieved. It was most enjoyed and brought back many childhood memories of the story being told. A classic that warms the heart when read. Pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Timeless Classic 13 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This timeless classic must be the most easily read and popular of Dickens' novels. I doubt if there is anyone who has not read or watched some version of this novel. I would recommend it to both young and old.

5.0 out of 5 stars I usually find Dickens hard going.... 11 Jan 2014
By Pyewacket TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

but this book is so readable it's nigh on unputdownable.

The story is about a Usurer who doesn't like anyone and isn't liked by anyone. His only love in his miserable life is money and he loathes Christmas with a passion.

His Nephew sees some good in him and entreats him to spend Christmas day with him and his family. The reply he get is 'Bah Humbug'.

On Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his old partner, Jacob Marley who is lashed all about with chains and boxes of spectral money. He entreats Scrooge to change his ways otherwise he will become like him. Doomed to walk the spirit world for eternity. He tells Scrooge that he will be visited by three spectres when the clock strikes midnight. Scrooge of course just says 'Bah Humbug'.

Anyhow, the spectres appear one after another and this is where the story starts to begin in earnest.

An absolute joy to read and also to watch on the TV.

I love this book and read it every year. I love it so much I even love the punctuation which is perfection in terms of adding intelligence and drama to a simple tale of morals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful classic, great story. 13 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Only slightly disappointed by the missing illustrations, as the titles are still there so it's apparent there should be something there. Otherwise it's well transcribed, and a great classic story, beautifully told with real wit and warmth. Everybody should read this at Christmas!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read
Whilst reading this story in my minds eye I could see all the characters as they appear in the Muppets Christmas Carol, this did not in any way diminish the story but enhanced it.
